Caring for furry companions is hard work. But it's worth it if you're an animal lover like me. I've cared for several cats during my lifetime and have always strived to give them the best life possible. Even if you save up before adopting a pet and budget accordingly, pet care costs can add up quickly.

Unexpected health issues can result in more costly vet and pet care bills. Because of this, I plan to invest in a pet insurance policy when I adopt my next cat. I'll share a few reasons why I'll prioritize buying pet insurance. You may want to consider doing the same.

An insurance policy can make routine care more affordable

Some pet insurance companies offer policies that include coverage for preventive care and routine veterinarian exams. Others offer separate standalone policies for this coverage, often called wellness policies. Purchasing an insurance policy with this coverage soon after getting my next furry friend can help make routine care like annual exams and vaccines less costly.

Prioritizing regular vet exams can help ensure your furry best friend stays healthy and you stay alert to potential health concerns for the future. Review our list of the best pet insurance for routine care to learn more about this type of pet insurance coverage.

It'll likely be more affordable to get insurance early

You likely won't be able to get insurance coverage for your pet's pre-existing medical conditions. However, some pet insurance plans may provide coverage for illnesses or care outside the scope of any pre-existing condition.

I've had pets that developed health concerns well into their lifetime. Now that I know how expensive some health issues can be to treat, I will likely invest in an insurance policy when I first get my next pet. Getting an insurance policy ASAP could save me money on premiums and allow me to insure my furry pal before serious health issues arise.

Emergency vet care can be costly

I learned this lesson the hard way when one of my cats needed to go to the emergency vet clinic for a urinary blockage a few years ago. We rushed him to the vet and got him the help he needed. But this level of care can quickly deplete your checking account balance if you lack emergency savings.

While many pet insurance policies include emergency care coverage, there may be limits to what's covered. Review your policy paperwork so you know what to expect before making an insurance claim.

Having some of these services covered by insurance can be helpful and keep you from having to rack up expensive credit card debt. Investing in pet insurance will help me feel more confident, knowing that I'm more likely to be able to afford care if I ever have a pet-related emergency.

Purchasing a pet insurance policy is a smart money move

Are you thinking about adopting a new dog or cat soon? Congrats, that's fantastic news! But before you head to your local shelter, consider how this life-changing decision will impact your finances. It's wise to consider costs beyond the initial adoption and vet visit.

You want to feel confident that you can continue to afford your pet's care needs throughout their lifetime, and insurance can help. Before buying a policy, compare insurers and coverage details to get an insurance policy that enables you to give your new pet the best life.
