    New ServiceNORTHSTAR Digital Literacy — The State Library of North Carolina offers access to Northstar to all public libraries and their community members. Northstar offers digital literacy coursework and certificates in three main areas: 1. Essential Computer Skills — Basic Computer Skills, Internet Basics, Using Email, Windows OS, Mac OS 2. Essential Software Skills — Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs 3. Using Technology in Daily Life — Social Media, Information Literacy, Career Search Skills, Accessing Telehealth Appointments, Supporting K-12 Distance Learning, Your Digital Footprint. Come on down to the library and get started.

    Special Events — Summer Reading PrizesKids/Teens — Summer reading grand prize. The kid or teen who reads the most number of minutes will win a collection of camping gear, which includes a one-person tent, sleeping bag, backpack, canteen, lantern and a S’mores kit. The gear was purchased with a gift card donated by WalMart and a cash donation from “appreciative patrons.”

    Kids and teens from K-12 earn prizes for the number of minutes read over the summer. They can choose from the Treasure Chest or goody basket for free coupons. Thanks to these businesses for their donations: Wendy’s, Duck Donuts, Chick-Fil-A, Foothills Coffee

    Adult Prize Basket — Every adult who turns in a book review form will be entered in the drawing for this basket.     August 5 — 9, 12 to 2 p.m. — The Surry County Office of Substance Abuse & Recovery and the Mount Airy Public Library present informative sessions to teach your child how to understand the meanings of media messages and advertisements. For rising third through fifth graders — become a Media Detective! Led by the dynamic detective duo, Snoop and Scoop (dog and cat mascots), students are taught to unravel the mysteries associated with media messages and advertisements by attending Media Detective School. Students “enroll” in Media Detective School and learn five clues to help them solve the mystery of advertising. Free. Snacks provided. Feel free to bring your lunch. Call 336-789-5108 to register .

    Genealogy meeting Monday, August 12 at 6 p.m. The Surry County Genealogical Association and The Mount Airy Public Library present David Hawkins, who will be speaking about the history of Flat Rock Baptist Church and the members who went there. Free.

    Dried and Pressed Flowers, Thursday, August 22 at 2 p.m. Free workshop with the Surry County Extension Master Gardener volunteers. Participants need to bring a thick book with non-glossy pages, such as a phone book. All other materials will be provided. Call 336-789-5108 or visit the library to reserve a spot.

    Great Southeast Pollinator Party, August 24 at 10 a.m. Led by the Surry County Extension Master Gardener volunteers to take part in the Great Southeast Pollinator census again this year. We will go outside and do our pollinator counting, then come inside for crafts and refreshments. Free. Call 336-789-5108 to reserve a spot.

    Alternate Learning Program for Adults with Learning Differences on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 10 a.m. — What to Expect: Read-alouds, crafts, games, puzzles, fellowship. RSVP at 336-789-5108 and ask for Emily.

    Cooking Club — August 13 at 2 p.m. Special ingredient: corn or maize. Dishes can include corn, cornmeal, samp, masa, mielie-meal, braaipap, maize rice, and maize grits. Bring the recipe to share. What to expect? Good food, laughter, free recipes, trivia, and a door prize.

    Art in Action Afternoon at the library is held every fourth Friday at 2 p.m. Our next meeting will be Aug. 23. Join us to make collage art, acrylic painting, watercolors, adult coloring, and blackout poetry art. Call to sign up at 336-789-5108.

    Hooked — Join our crochet and knitting club, every Wednesday at 3 p.m. Open for all skill levels. Bring your own yarn and make the group project or bring your own project to work on.

    Tai Chi Fridays. Experience meditation in motion, 10 a.m. every Friday in the Multipurpose Room. All skill levels are welcome.

    It’s Yoga Y’all meets on the third Saturday of the month at 10:30 a.m.

    The Community Book Club — North Carolina Reads is North Carolina Humanities’ statewide book club, annually featuring five books that explore issues of racial, social, and gender equity and the history and culture of North Carolina. Our book club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. August’s selection is, “The Fifth Avenue Artists Society” by Joy Callaway.

    Chapters Book Club meets the third Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. Members discuss the different books they have read.

    The Preteen Book Club will meet August 15 at 4 p.m. We will be reading “Spy School: British Invasion” by Stuart Gibbs. Come out and meet other teens your age, snacks and socialization.

    Teen Book Club meets the fourth Thursday at 4 p.m. We will be reading “Peace Maker” by Joseph Bruchac. Come out and meet other teens your age, snacks and socialization.

    Murder, Mystery and Mayhem Book Club on August 27 at 5:30 p.m. A book club for adults that focuses on murder, mayhem, true crime and other tales of terror. Our August selection is: “The Unmarked Grave: A True Story of Romance, Love, Faith, Deceit and Tragedy” by Haskell A. Davis. Join us in person or discuss online with Google Meet.

    Plaid Cloth Book Club — Every Second Wednesday at 12 p.m. at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History. For August we will discuss all things literary, come prepared to discuss what you have been reading.
