    Run under the stars at the Glow in the Park 5K

    Surry Country Parks and Recreation and Surry County Health and Nutrition Center are partnering to host the Second Annual Glow in the Park 5K at Fisher River on Oct. 19 at Fisher River Park, 251 County Home Road in Dobson. Pre-race family fun festivities begin at 4 p.m. and the race itself will take place closer to twilight at 7:30 p.m.

    “The trails here at Fisher River Park will be lit up with glow balloons, blacklights, and different kinds of glow supplies all throughout the whole park. This is a great opportunity for the whole family to come out for an evening of glow fun in the park,” said Andrew Romine of Surry County Parks and Recreation.

    This is aimed at being an evening of fun for the entire family, or organizers hope many will turnout to run or walk. Before the fun out on the trail, prior to the race there will be inflatable games, hayrides, and other activities available for everyone.

    “Events and package pickup will start at 4 p.m. Prior to the race there will be glow paint, glow supplies, and glow sticks for everybody to come deck themselves out. After the race we’ll have free campfires, S’mores, and snacks for all participants,” Romine said.

    Those wanting to participate in the run must register by Oct. 3 to ensure they will receive one of the glow in the dark t-shirts. Those registering after that date will not receive a t-shirt. Registration for the event is $15 which will includes the t-shirt for those signing up before the deadline.

    To top it off, there will be a free concert by Janus 4-14 from 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the amphitheater in Fisher River Park. The music will continue as the race is ongoing for those who may wish to attend but not tackle the trail.

    While it may be true the race is all just for the fun of it, those who take their 5K times seriously or want to measure their results against others should know that the race will be officially timed event with chip timing

    The schedule of events for the Glow in the Park 5K is:

    - Park inflatable games, hayrides, and fun ctivities: 4 p.m. — 9 p.m.

    - Packet pickup/bib pickup: 4 p.m. — 7 p.am.

    - Free concert by Janus 4-14: 7:15 p.m. — 9 p.m.

    - Race start: 7:30 p.m.
