SCC Students Receive SECU People Helping People Scholarship

DOBSON — Two Surry Community College curriculum students were recently awarded the State Employees Credit Union People Helping People Scholarship established by the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation to assist students across North Carolina in obtaining their educational goals.

Jacob Heath and Drew Blackwell each received a $5,000 scholarship. Their scholarship awards were presented during the September Surry Community College Board of Trustees meeting.

Heath graduated from Calvary Christian School. He is proud to be a Christian and enjoys helping people. He is enrolled in the associate in arts program at SCC with plans to transfer to UNC-Greensboro and major in business management. His long-term goal is to become a finance manager, which he hopes will allow him to help people find financial solutions. He is the son of Kenny and Tracy Heath.

Blackwell is a graduate of South Rowan High School. While in high school, he enjoyed working with his hands and discovered an interest and talent for woodworking. He has built a gun cabinet along with several other items. Blackwell is enrolled in the Construction Management Program at SCC with plans to transfer to UNC-Charlotte. He hopes to be a business owner in the construction field. He is the son of Ronnie and Angela Blackwell.

The scholarships were presented by Elizabeth White, SCC director of financial aid and veterans affairs, Jennifer Pardue, SCC director of college and career readiness and HRD/SECU advisory board member, and Josh Matthews, SECU assistant branch manager, Dobson.

Since being established, the People Helping People scholarship program represents an annual commitment of more than $5 million, with a collective total of over $81 million since the initial scholarship funding began in 2005.
