HAYS — North Surry picked up its third-consecutive win by defeating North Wilkes 52-13 on Oct. 4.

The Greyhounds racked up more than 450 yards of offense and forced five turnovers on defense to stay unbeaten in Foothills 2A Conference competition. The defending FH2A Champs have won their past nine conference games.

Two Hounds set career-highs as North Surry had its most prolific passing performance of the past three seasons.

Senior quarterback Kam McKnight completed 9-of-13 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns. Friday’s game was McKnight’s second 300-yard performance of the season and his fourth game tossing at least three touchdowns.

McKnight’s favorite receiver against the Vikings (1-6, 0-3 FH2A) was junior Fisher Leftwich, who just six days earlier set career-highs in rushing attempts and rushing yards. Leftwich led North Surry (5-2, 3-0 FH2A) with five receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Leftwich averaged 36.8 yards per reception, while McKnight averaged 37.8 yards per completion.

Each of McKnight’s passing touchdowns came on completions of at least 50 yards. Leftwich caught a 63-yard touchdown pass out of the gate against the Vikings, then Jasper Wilmoth followed suit with an identical touchdown for his lone reception of the game. Leftwich caught his second touchdown, a 50-yard strike from McKnight, in the third quarter.

Isaac Webb added three receptions for 93 yards. Wilmoth also caught a 2-point conversion reception.

Even with North Surry’s strong aerial attack the visitors didn’t abandon the run. The Greyhounds rushed 25 times for 122 yards. Sweatman led the Hounds with 12 carries for 50 yards and two touchdowns, marking his fourth game of the year with multiple rushing scores. Leftwich brought his total up to four touchdowns by scoring twice on the ground to go with 34 yards, while Jhett Tolbert added 27 yards and Demarcus McClure finished with 11.

Leftwich and Owen McMillian each ran in 2-point conversions.

Erik Cabrera knocked down 3-of-4 PATs and split the uprights with a 20-yard field goal.

North Wilkes scored once in the second quarter and once in the fourth. Nearly half of the Vikings’ drives ended in turnovers.

Payten Sechrist and Alex Cazares each had interceptions in Friday’s game. Cazares also recovered a fumble, as did both Anthony Williams and Uriah Kearse. Gage Combs forced two fumbles, and Jaxton Turney forced one.

Combs also led North Surry in total tackles with seven. Turney added five, followed by Sechrist, Leftwich and Webb with four each. Kearse and Turney each had a tackle for a loss, and Turney added North Surry’s lone sack of the day.

Leftwich led the Greyhounds with two pass deflections in the secondary, and McMillian added one.

With the Oct. 4 win over North Wilkes, North Surry is one of just three FH2A teams unbeaten in league competition; all three teams hail from Surry County. North Surry leads the way at 3-0, followed by Surry Central at 2-0 and East Surry at 1-0. West Wilkes is fourth in the conference at 1-1, followed by Wilkes Central at 1-2, Forbush at 0-2 and North Wilkes at 0-3.

North Surry continues its road to a repeat by hosting Surry Central (4-2, 2-0 FH2A) on Oct. 11. Surry Central is riding a three-game winning streak, with its most recent win coming against West Wilkes by a score of 44-24.

Surry Central was the only FH2A team in 2023 to play the eventual league champs to a single-digit game.
