DWI suspect crashes into house

A Mount Airy man is facing driving while impaired and other charges after crashing into a house and causing $50,000 in damages, according to city police.

The incident happened late Sunday night, when Jose Alfredo Castro Millan, 26, of 1920 Caudle Drive, was behind the wheel of a 2016 Hyundai Genesis.

Millan was headed west up Hamburg Street toward South Renfro Street around 11:20 p.m. and left the roadway. He drove into the yard of a house at 202 Hamburg St. and crashed into the structure located just off Renfro.

“He hit into my basement and tore it all to pieces,” said Vicky Frye, who resides there.

“It was scary,” Frye added Wednesday. “I went out in my gown and bedroom shoes to see what was going on,” said the homeowner, who said the driver was “booking it” and believes the outcome could have been much worse if the angle of the vehicle were different.

“If it came up higher, it would have been in my bedroom.”

City officers arriving at the scene to investigate found Millan to be impaired, which was confirmed after he was placed under arrest and transported to the police station for processing.

Breath testing there revealed his blood-alcohol content to be 0.10%, higher than the legal limit for operating a vehicle of 0.08 %

In addition to DWI, Millan was charged with injury to real property and no operator’s license.

He was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $3,500 secured bond and is facing a Nov. 25 appearance in District Court.

The vehicle was impounded.
