Distracted driving nets Early College student a scholarship
In recognition of April as Distracted Driving Month, Alliance Insurance Services and Magnolia Eye Care held a competition in which students submitted videos about the dangers of distracted driving. This year marked the fourth scholarship competition sponsored by Alliance Insurance Services that turned a negative, distracted driving, into a positive and profitable experience for local students. Mayberry Mall abuzz with BizFest
Inside Mayberry Mall Wednesday there was much more foot traffic than one may have expected. Just pulling into the parking lot, it was obvious something was afoot as a line of food trucks were parked adjacent to main entrance ready to serve. Vehicles, a piece of heavy equipment and a trailer — property with a combined valued of nearly $100,000 — have been reported stolen from separate locations this week in Mount Airy. Partners Behavioral Health eyeing vastly expanded role
Jeff Eads of Partners Behavioral Health Management briefed the Surry County Board of Commissioners on changes to his organization and explained that the organization is in transition as its CEO Rhett Melton is approaching retirement on July 1. Brent Hull rides in a past tractor parade during Mayberry Farm Fest with his grandson, Case Brent Sechrist, who was named after both his granddad and the Case tractor they are piloting. Northern Regional Hospital was represented at BizFest by Diana Garcia and Kayla Edwards. While the hospital cannot directly solicit business in the manner that others at BizFest can, Edwards said it was a chance to show off that the hospital is a part of the community.

Melissa Hooker said that the Interworks space in downtown Mount Airy is a good fit for businesses who need a temporary office presence. She also educated that some of their clients live in areas with poor internet connectivity so using the Interworks space can alleviate that hassle for them.

Surry County’s commissioners discuss the budget at their 2023 planning retreat in Elkin. At this meeting, the board was first educated on possible transferring ownership of the Flat Rock — Bannertown water and sewer district to Mount Airy. The county completed the move last year, with the final meeting of the district to be held Monday.
