BLACK MOUNTAIN — The Surry County 10U All-Star Baseball team captured the Cal Ripken Western NC State Championship on June 29. Alliance celebrates two decades of service with donation
The time for celebration at Alliance Insurance Services has arrived as they are celebrating their twentieth anniversary. Owner Christoper Cook said the celebration of two decades of service began with a special gathering and recognition of Alliance’s 37 full-time and five part-time employees. “We are seven times larger today than we were in 2012,” said Cook. “We’re also five times larger than we were 10 years ago, and we’ve managed to grow more than 18% percent each year.” ...
Downtown tax district expands Monday
The downtown Municipal Service District (MSD), where property owners pay extra taxes, officially was expanded Monday with the addition of a site now occupied by The Mount Airy News — despite concerns being raised. Honor Society, DAR help disadvantaged veterans
This spring Surry Community College’s Alpha Xi Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society partnered with the James Hunter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to help feed disadvantaged and homeless veterans in the region. The two organizations collected approximately 152 pounds of non-perishable food items for the Veterans Coalition Food Pantry. Suspect killed after opening fire on police
An attempted police stop in Carroll County, Virginia, turned into a high-speed chase that ended in the suspect’s fatal shooting by law enforcement in a neighboring county. Christopher J. Mayberry tennis players celebrated the annual arrival of the Wimbledon Championships by hosting their own prestigious event on June 29. Holiday garbage changes announced
The July 4 week in Mount Airy is being accompanied by changes in city sanitation schedules. This included no yard waste pickups on Monday, when both the Monday and Thursday industrial roll-off collections occurred. There will be no industrial roll-off collection Thursday. Meanwhile, the Thursday residential and recycling routes are to be serviced under the normal schedule. Also, the Thursday commercial garbage route will be collected on schedule, which was the case on Monday. Municipal offices are slated to be closed Thursday in observance of Independence Day.
Copeland Elementary students enjoy Chill Out Event
All students at Copeland Elementary School recently had a fun day at the “Chill Out Event.” Students enjoyed Popsicles and dancing while they chilled out and prepared for their End of Grade tests as the school year drew to a close.
