Pilot Mountain Civic Club awards scholarship
Members of the Pilot Mountain Civic Club recently recognized the recipient of the 2024 Civic Club Scholarship Award at their June 18 meeting. This long-standing tradition is an annual award given to a student planning to attend Surry Community College. The Civic Club collaborates with the counselors at East Surry High School who evaluate applicants based on need as well as achievement of specific academic criteria. A panel of principals, counselors, and assistant principals review senior student applications and recommend the award recipient. ...

The Dobson Board of Commissioners recently approved its next budget while hearing about goals to improve employee retention and provide adequate water service for the future while holding property tax rates steady. For fiscal year 2024-2025, which begins July 1, the board approved a budget totaling $4,601,293 for all town operations, including proposed capital improvements and contributions from the general fund reserves and restricted funds. Clear for takeoff: MAHS chosen for drone program
Mount Airy High School soon may be the launching pad for area students hoping to pursue a career as drone operators. The school is selected as one of 64 high schools across the state for a partnership with Zipline, a company the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction said is the world’s largest autonomous delivery service. That new collaboration will give students an opportunity to launch themselves into a future...
Elkin school board appoints new member, rejecting GOP choice
The Elkin City Schools Board of Education has a new member — but not the one chosen for a vacant seat by the Surry County Republican Party. The opening was created when Johnny Blevins resigned last month because he is moving out of the school district. Because the school board is partisan, state law puts the local GOP in charge of selecting a replacement. That organization presented Patty Crosswhite, but...
The Surry SHIIP crew - here to help you
If you or someone you know has celebrated a 65th birthday, it is amazing how much “fan mail” fills the mailbox. Much of the mail is advertising insurance plans. Every envelope claims to have the perfect plan, not to mention the endless phone calls which are also received. The gift of Medicare due to age or disability and all of the insurance decisions which go along with that, can be overwhelming. Don’t despair, SHIIP is here. SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, is part...
Local man to attend GOP Convention
When the historic Republican National Convention unfolds next month in Milwaukee, a local man will be right there in the thick of things. A.J. Daoud, a Pilot Mountain businessman, has been picked as a delegate for the event scheduled from July 15-18. The main item on the agenda then will be the official nomination of someone to be on the Republican ticket for president, presumably Donald Trump, the nation’s former...
Dobson welcomes the return of Music at the Market
Some might say that any time is a good time to discover Dobson, but soon there will be another slate of reasons to venture to the county seat that don’t involve a visit to the courthouse. Music at the Market is returning to the Surry County Farmer’s Market in Dobson for another series of free concerts. “Come hear live bluegrass and old-time string band music emanating from the foothills of...
Academy gets graduates fired up
Much goes in to being a firefighter, as graduates of the Mount Airy Citizens Fire Academy learned during a five-week series that explored the ins and outs of an unpredictable and sometimes-dangerous profession. “There was something hands-on every week,” said Emily Mauck, one of nine participants in the second-annual program lasting from May 6 to June 12. For example, the active group witnessed a live structural burn of a house...
Foothills West wins 6th straight, prepares for postseason
The Foothills West Junior Legion Team closed the regular season on a high note by winning six-straight games. Post 123 outscored opponents 61-27 during its recent winning streak. Foothills scored at least seven runs in all six wins and recorded double-digit runs in four of those games. The sixth victory in Foothills’ win streak came in the team’s regular season finale on June 26, in which West posted another lopsided...
