A trip to the strawberry field on a May Morning
Mother’s Day heralds the start of the strawberry harvest season. In Surry, Stokes, and Yadkin counties, the pick-your-own fields are filled with red berries and white blooms. The season will last for all of May and a week or so into June. You can pick your own berries or purchase berries by the gallon bucket already picked. Surry Early College students visit Georgia
Last month, 68 Surry Early College High School of Design students visited Atlanta, Georgia. The students watched an Atlanta Braves game, toured the Martin Luther King Jr. Museum, and experienced an architecture and history tour of Fox Theater Atlanta. On this tour students learned about the golden era of the movie palace. The tour concluded with a question and answer session hosted by the Fox Theater leadership team discussing career opportunities that most people do not associate with a theater. On the trip students also visited the World of Coca Cola, the Georgia Aquarium, and Zoo Atlanta.
Dorsett named Principal of the Year
Jason Dorsett has been named the Mount Airy City Schools (2023-2024 Principal of the Year. At a recent Board of Education meeting, he was announced to a full room of students, staff, and community members. As Mount Airy High School’s principal since 2018, “he has led a talented and hard-working staff through the pandemic and post-pandemic learning loss of students,” city school officials said. Pilot to honor Hometown Heroes
The Town of Pilot Mountain will be honoring servicemen and servicewomen with its Pilot Mountain’s Hometown Heroes Banner Program. Officials with the town said this year marks the fifth anniversary for the program and they want to make the recognition ceremony “extra special. Grant funds Recovery Coach training program
Surry County Office of Substance Abuse Recovery (SCOSAR) recently announced it will be offering a Recovery Coach Training program sponsored by the Surry County Recovery Friendly Workplace Program and a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission’s Investments Supporting Partnerships in Recovery Ecosystems grant. “We are excited to offer a training series for professionals and community members based on the gold standard of Recovery Coach approved by the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery. SCC nursing students perform mass casualty simulation drill

WINSTON-SALEM — East Surry’s Levi Watson and Kade Talton finished runner-up in the 2A Midwest Regional Tennis Championship. Three local schools competed in the Foothills 2A Conference Track & Field Championship on May 2. The three Surry County schools combined to win 31 individual medals at the FH2A Championship. Wayne Hodges said that the time has come again for the Descendants of Bartholomew Hodges Family Reunion. It will be held on Saturday, May 25, at the Hodges historic Hodges cabin. Land sale snagged on lingering questions
Surry County owns a piece of land at the corner of McMickle School Road and Haystack Road in Dobson that once housed a Head Start location.
