County fire coordinator wants burn ban, state funds for volunteers

NATCHEZ—Adams County Fire Coordinator Darryl Smith is asking residents to refrain from burning anything.

Smith is asking the state to approve a burn ban. Until that’s approved, he seeks the cooperation of Adams County residents to help prevent grass fires and the like that come from burning things outdoors.

“The conditions are so very dry,” Smith said. “We have had no rain and fires can spread and get out of control very quickly.”

The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a heat stress advisory for Friday for an area that includes Jackson. In addition, no precipitation is in the Natchez-Adams County forecast for the next seven days.

Also Monday at the Adams County Board of Supervisors meeting, Smith asked supervisors if money sent from the State of Mississippi each year to support volunteer firefighters could be directed to Adams County’s volunteer firefighters.

After the meeting, Smith said the state sends between $80,000 and $100,000 each year as a rebate to counties to be used for equipment and the like for volunteer fire departments.

“It varies according to population,” White said. He said he does not know how having a contract with the City of Natchez Fire Department for fire services affects that payment from the state.

The county board agreed to terms for continuing to contract with the city for fire services at the end of July.
