Fire destroys county home Thursday night

NATCHEZ — An Adams County family lost everything Thursday night when their home at 87 Gaynor Road caught fire.

No one was injured, said Natchez Fire Chief Robert Arrington. However, the home was a complete loss. Arrington said when the original call came in to his department at approximately 9:30 p.m. it was reported two children were inside the house. That proved not to be the case, Arrington said.

“No one was in the structure when we arrived,” he said. “We struggled with water issues. The house was in a remote neighborhood far away from water, and the first was pretty bad on arrival.”

The fire department responded with two trucks, each carrying 1,000 gallons of water, but firefighters had to travel more than a mile to a hydrant to fill us with water. And the water pressure at the hydrant was not significant to quickly fill the truck.

“Anytime we have a structure fire, we roll at least two trucks. This was an incredibly long way to go. In the city, we have a hydrant on every block, but we had to travel more than a mile to get to a hydrant, and the water pressure is not as much as in the city. The city has really good water pressure, which benefits us because of the volume of water it puts out will quickly fill the trucks. Some county hydrants are comparable in pressure to the city, but this one was not,” Arrington said.

While no official cause of the fire has been determined, Arrington said the resident of the house told him they had been having electrical issues in a portion of the house.

“She saw sparks coming from an outlet, and that’s what she thinks started it,” he said.
