VICKSBURG — For the first time this season, the Cathedral High School Green Wave finally did what head coach Josh Loy has wanted to see from his team — play a complete game for four quarters.

Cathedral quarterback Tristan Fondren threw for over 200 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another while the Green Wave’s defense kept longtime Catholic School rival St. Aloysius High School from scoring at all in the second half for a 34-10 win over the Flashes to keep the Father Camp Cup with Cathedral for another year.

“We challenged them at halftime to finish the game, play for four quarters, and we finally did,” Loy said. “We shut them out in the second half.”

Fondren threw touchdown passes of 76 yards and 43 yards to Terrance Lee and added a 15-yard touchdown to Troy Dillon in the first half as the Green Wave overcame a slow start and a long touchdown run by St. Aloysius at the 4:27 mark of the first quarter to take a 21-10 halftime lead.

Then after a scoreless third quarter, Fondren scored on a 13-yard run with 6:55 left in the game and Fred Lane added a 14-yard TD run with 1:36 remaining.

“We did a good job controlling the line of scrimmage. We forced some turnovers on defense,” Loy said.

As for Fondren’s performance, Loy said, “He did extremely well. He managed the game well considering the wet field conditions and the wet ball. He’s starting to grow up.”

Cathedral (2-1) will have its hands full next Friday night when the Green Wave welcome defending MAIS Class 6A state champion Hartfield Academy to D’Evereaux Stadium for the annual Military Appreciation Game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
