    Local golfers secure trip to OSAA state championships

    The Newberg boys golf team headlined local performances from district competitions this past week, as the Tigers finished third with a total score of 321 at the 6A Special District 1 at-large regional tournament to qualify for the OSAA 6A boys golf state championships at Quail Valley Golf Course on Monday, May 13.

    Senior Ray Greller scored 6-over 78 to finish seventh overall and lead Newberg, while younger brother Luke Greller finished 18th at 8-over 80. Sophomore James Teters and senior Monte Romersa finished 20th and 24th, while Jackson Carr rounded the out group and finished 47th.

    Meanwhile, on the girls side, sophomore Adele Gregory is the lone qualifier for the OSAA 6A girls golf state championships, which will be held on Monday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis. The girls finished sixth at the at-large regional tournament, with Gregory leading the team with a 17th-place finish. Senior Gabby Zielsdorf finished 25th, while senior Avery Hansen finished 30th at.

    Sophomore Ella Qualls finished 37th. Senior Cameron Kelly finished 44th.

    Canby

    For the Cougars, only one golfer from the boys team advanced to the OSAA 5A state championships, as freshman Mason DeBruyn secured his trip as a district qualifier.

    At the 5A Special District 1 at-large regional tournament, DeBruyn led the boys, finishing fourth at 8-over 80. The team finished fourth overall with a total score of 355. Senior Ryan French finished 10 strokes behind DeBruyn for 15th, while sophomore Jordan Lopez finished 18th. Cohen Vandecoevering finished 22nd and Jack Thompson finished 28th.

    The girls, meanwhile, will be sending three golfers to the state championships on Monday at Trysting Tree Golf Club. Junior Gracie Carter secured her trip at the district tournament, according to the OSAA, finishing seventh. At the at-large regional tournament, the Cougars finished third, totaling 449 points. Gracie English and Jazmin Diaz finished 11th and 13th, respectively, securing their trip to state as regional qualifiers.

    Molalla

    Junior Massimo Cereghino secured his trip to the OSAA 4A boys golf state championships at Emerald Valley Golf Club and Resort in Creswell in dominant fashion, winning the individual Special District 1 title by 14 strokes.

    The team finished seventh overall. Jack Davies was the next highest finisher at 11th, while Zachary Clinton and Nathan Guerricagoitia finished 34th and 35th, respectively. William Person rounded out the team at 50th.

    Meanwhile, at the 4A girls Special District 2 championships, North Marion's Riley Patzer finished ninth overall.
