    Newberg track and field qualifies 11 athletes for 6A state championships

    After two days of competition at the Pacific Conference Championships at George Fox University on Tuesday, May 7, and Thursday, May 9, the Tigers are sending a total of 11 athletes to the OSAA 6A track and field state championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.

    Dax Duggan was crowned the district champion in the 300-meter hurdles, running a personal best of 39.29 seconds. The time slates Duggan with the second-fastest performance in 6A this season. Senior Gabriel Bondurant won the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 3.25 inches, while sophomore Benjamin Bondurant cleared 5-8.75 to finish second.

    Isaac Hankel, meanwhile, earned himself a trip to state after he finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 13-2.25. Gracen Sandoz finished second in the boys javelin, securing his state bid with a personal best throw of 172-7.

    With what now has become bit a expected, sophomore Sophia Castaneda produced the most prolific outing at the conference championships, adding three more district titles to her ever-growing list of accolades. She breezed to victory in the 400 meters, winning by almost four seconds, and set a personal best of 54.17, re-breaking her school record and setting a new meet record. In the 200, Castaneda posted a personal best of 25.7 to win, setting yet another school and meet record.

    Castaneda was joined on the 4x100 relay by junior Gracie Hess and seniors Tenley Pothoff and Natalie Wall, as the team won in 49.29. Sophomore Sophia Carpenter finished second in the high jump, clearing 5-1.75. Junior Esther Muthiah blazed her way to a pair of personal bests in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, winning the former in 15.87 and finishing second in the latter at 47.28.

    Other notable results

    Wall missed qualifying for state in the 100 meters by just 0.02 seconds, as she finished third in a season best of 12.60. Senior Nathan Call ran a personal best of 52.20 in the 400, finishing sixth. Senior Caden Smith ran a time of 2:00.27 to finish fifth in the 800 meters, while Abigail Wheatley ran a personal best of 4:59.47 in the 1500 meters, finishing fourth.

    Wheatley added another personal best in the 3000 meters, clocking in at 10:44.14 to finish third. Duggan finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.50 and Benjamin Bondurant finished third in the 300-meter hurdles in a personal best of 41.36. In the boys 4x100 relay, the team of Caden Johns, Jazon Clement, Kobey Clement and Nathan Call finished fifth in 45.05.

    Smith and Duggan were joined on the 4x400 relay by Ethan Parmer and Samuel Hardy, finishing third in 3:30.16. Ella Beaudry finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 99-5. Junior Aubrey Case threw a personal best of 112-10 in the javelin and finished third, while Thomas Schneider finished sixth on the boys side at 145-2.

    In the girls pole vault, Ashlin Wytsma cleared a personal best of 7-6.5 to finish third, while Elise Jones set a personal best of 15-6 in the long jump, finishing sixth. Caleb Lofdahl finished third in the boys pole vault after he cleared a personal best of 12-2.5.

    Kobey Clement set a personal best in the long jump as well, finishing third on the boys side at 20-6.25. Jones added a personal best in the triple jump, leaping 33-8 to finish fourth. Benjamin Bondurant, meanwhile, finished sixth in the boys triple jump at 38-8.25.
