A Newberg-based nonprofit has invited the community to assemble in September to learn more about its mission.

Chehalem Youth and Family Services will hold its annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at River Street Church of God, 715 S. River St. in Newberg.

Chehalem Youth and Family Services operates Chehalem House, which is “a shared living, furnished, affordable rental house that helps seven to nine individuals at a time who have barriers to being able to transition to permanent housing.” It is operated by Friends of Chehalem House volunteers.

Friends of Chehalem House provides governance, nonprofit status and collaboration in concert with the steering committee at the Community Drop-In Center, a function of 2nd Street Church, in downtown Newberg.

To fund its services and the efforts of some other nonprofits, Friends of Chehalem House operates the Lucky Finds Thrift Store at the corner of College and Hancock streets in Newberg. Friends of Chehalem House also provides free vouchers to homeless and low-income families.

Through the system people are referred to Love INC, the Community Drop-In Center, 2nd Street Church and River Street Church of God for services. The thrift store also acts as a training site for Easter Seals and for persons experiencing disabilities.

Through its efforts, Friends of Chehalem House replaced the roof on the thrift store in 2022 and is in the midst of raising funds to replace the facility’s flooring and make other improvements on the property.

The Friends group has a board of seven local members, which meets monthly. It is led by chairman Bruce Alford, vice chairman Bruce Stephensen and treasurer/secretary Cheryll Dailey.
