After a down campaign last season, Newberg volleyball will be led by a collection of new faces this year.

The Tigers return just four athletes from last year’s 4-17 season, the program’s fewest wins since 2017.

“We've had a lot of girls show commitment to the weight room and open gyms, as well as participate in club volleyball over the year,” head coach Thomas Salness said. “We only have a handful of varsity players returning, so this season will be a growth year for us as players learn to compete at a high level.”

It won’t be just an adjustment for the players, as Newberg’s whole program will look a bit different. Former JV head coach Rachel Tannery has transitioned to Thomas’ head assistant, while former players Giselle Benetti and Becca Upchurch are returning to the Tigers as the JV and JV2 head coaches, respectively.

Ben Patterson — former McMinnville head coach and assistant principal at Newberg — is offering his support as well, volunteering and joining Thomas and Tannery on the sidelines.

With all the shifting parts, returners and seniors Audrey Schmitt and Emma Kriehn have provided a consistent presence and established themselves as leaders among the Tigers.

“(Schmitt) has been looked at as a leader by her peers. She works hard and shows up ready to work,” Thomas said. “Emma Kriehm has also been very committed, although she is out with a knee injury. She's been a vocal leader and a huge help in the weight room, teaching others about form. It's hard to be injured and keep showing up, and she is doing a great job.”

On the court, Schmitt is expected to bolster the offense, likely leading the Tigers in kills, while outside hitter Vivienne Zuniga along with setters Adriana Maffia and Alaina Voeller should provide an additional boost. Defensively, newcomers Reagan Johnson and Peyton Lindell should emerge and help shoulder the load.

The Tigers officially open their season at home against Aloha on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

“A successful season (for me) would look like a positive record, winning more than we are losing,” Thomas said. “Personally, I like seeing growth in the players every week at practice. That shows success for me.”
