More Oregon leaders react to U.S. Supreme Court ruling on abortion medicine
Oregon political leaders continued to react Friday, June 14, after the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously upheld access to mifepristone, a widely available abortion drug, earlier in the week. The decision written by Justice Brett Kavanaugh carefully sidestepped the issue of future court challenges to the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone. The decision, released Thursday, only rules that the plaintiffs in this case — anti-abortion doctors — don’t have standing to sue because they do not prescribe the drug themselves. ...

RURAL REFLECTIONS: June is bursting out all over
Indeed it is! And, this column comes out at one of the best times. Father’s Day is on Sunday and as it happens often, so is my birthday. It is a month of weddings, graduations, anniversaries and all of the other birthdays that aren’t mine. My sister is named June. She was born on June 1. We don’t really know if the name came from the day of her birth or just a nice name that was originally her middle name but soon became her...

2025 Toyota Crown Signia makes station wagons great again
With the exception of Volvo and Mercedes-Benz, most automakers shy away from the term "station wagon," but that peculiar breed of automobile has been serving the function of an SUV for nearly 100 years. There is also a sizable market that really wants the handling of a passenger car with the ability to carry substantial cargo, and that's what you get with a wagon. If you ask Toyota, they'll tell you that the just-launched Crown Signia is a crossover SUV. But after a first drive...

He was 83. The Oregonian/OregonLive was the first to report his death from heart failure on Wednesday. His family confirmed his death to KOIN 6 News in a statement. Goldschmidt served as Portland’s mayor from 1973 to...
Northwest leaders try again for more federal money for prescribed burns to prevent wildfire
Oregon and Washington leaders are using the start of the region’s wildfire season to once again ask Congress for more money for prescribed burns. The practice of strategically starting low-intensity fires across forests to improve soil and ecosystem health and prevent catastrophic wildfires has been common among tribes in the West for millennia. In recent years, it has gained more traction among the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the Oregon Department of Forestry as an urgently needed wildfire prevention tool. But...
Radich appointed interim Newberg-Dundee superintendent; Phillips takes medical leave
The Newberg-Dundee school district will move forward with a familiar face at the helm: former Superintendent Paula Radich. Radich was unanimously approved by the school board on Tuesday evening, June 11, to serve as acting superintendent after it was announced that Superintendent Stephen Phillips will be on medical leave for two months. “Last night, right before the budget meeting, I and other board members learned that Dr. Phillips needed to...

Gardening is a rewarding hobby that pays a host of significant dividends. Many people love gardening because it allows them to spend time outdoors, and that simple pleasure is a notable benefit of working in a garden. However, the National Initiative for Consumer Horticulture notes that gardening provides additional benefits, including helping people get sufficient exercise, reduce stress and improve mood. With so much to gain from gardening, it’s no...

'Where's the money?': Protesters take aim at Newberg schools superintendent, demand his resignation
With school district headquarters as a backdrop, nearly 100 protesters assembled on Monday evening, June 10, to demand that Superintendent Stephen Phillips and two of his staff resign in response to the late-May revelation that the district is facing a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall. The rally came about in response to word, delivered by an analyst from a state agency on behalf of district staff, that Newberg schools are facing a $3.94 million shortfall just weeks before it is required by law to adopt a budget....
It's not his first rodeo: Ivan McClellan shines light on Black cowboys and cowgirls
At rodeo events, Ivan McClellan has suffered a broken arm and cuts, and he has run from bulls and jumped over and ducked under fences. It ain’t easy being in rodeo — even for a photographer documenting the people living and playing in the western culture and lifestyle. The job can be perilous. “I’m taller than most people, and I always crouch down to get the shot from the angle I want,” he said. “That’s the most harmful thing I do.” ...
Scappoose-area teen readies for summer following strong showing at national spelling bee
She may not have grabbed the winner’s cup, but Scappoose-area teenager Rubina Wiedemer is ready to enjoy the summer after coming oh-so close to winning the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Wiedemer tied for 17th and made it to the semifinals, where she was eliminated in round 7 after incorrectly defining the word “shellacking.” That said, the 14-year-old Wiedemer is ready to leave the national media spotlight and focus on...
Newberg public schools send grads off in quartet of ceremonies
Although it is Newberg High School’s commencement ceremony that people think of when they picture graduation exercises locally, in fact it is just the most visible of the annual rites of passage associated with public schools. Friday evening’s June 7 commencement at Loran Douglas Field, where 241 blue-and-gold-clad youths strode across the stage to receive their diplomas, joined the culmination of education journeys at Catalyst, Chehalem Online Academy, GED recipients and the school’s students in the Support Advocacy for Independence in Life (SAIL) program. All...
Climate change devastating to some marine species, OSU study indicates
Marine plants and animals on the Pacific Coast have been hit by an epidemic and devastating heat wave over the past decade, and some have not bounced back, a new study found. The research by scientists at Oregon State University has implications for the planet: A properly functioning ocean is crucial for a healthy planet, and an imbalance among marine species not only affects that ecosystem but also can touch people, they said. ...
