COSBY — Sunset Gap Community Center is celebrating 100 years of serving the community. A Christian center built to serve the entire family, Sunset Gap serves about 700 families every month. It offers a food pantry, thrift shop, mission teams and playground with walking track. Independence Day closings
Independence Day is Thursday, July 4. With the holiday comes closings on a local, state and federal government level. Here is a rundown of holiday closings. The courthouse and courthouse annex will be closed on Thursday.The Cocke County Landfill and all convenience centers will be closed on July 4.Newport City Hall will be closed.Any city trash pickup set for Thursday will be done on Friday.Parrottsville Town Hall will be closed.The Cocke County Health Department will be closed.Financial institutions will be closed.There will be no mail and the post offices will be closed.FedEx and UPS will not be making deliveries.All four community libraries will be closed.The Newport Plain Talk office will be closed.Some retail establishments may be operating on an abbreviated schedule, so check in advance.
Free agent S Tashaun Gipson Sr. suspended six games
NFL free agent safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. was suspended six games by the NFL on Tuesday after violating the league's performance-enhancing substance abuse policy. The suspension will not go into effect until the regular season, if and when Gipson signs with a team. The former Pro Bowler in 2014, while a member of the Cleveland Browns, still can participate in all preseason activities, including games. In 12 NFL seasons, Gipson has 684 tackles, 33 interceptions and three TDs in 173 games (165 starts) for the Browns (2012-15), Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-18), Houston Texans (2019), Chicago Bears (2020-21) and 49ers after going undrafted out of Wyoming. The 33-year-old, who reportedly had been considering retirement, started all 33 games he played in over the last two seasons for the 49ers, making 121 tackles with six interceptions. --Field Level Media
Utah football No. 1 in Big 12 preseason poll
Utah could begin its first season in the Big 12 with a bang. The Utes were picked to finish first in the conference's football media preseason poll, released Tuesday. Utah, moving from the Pac-12, garnered 20 first-place votes (906 points), followed by Kansas State (19 first-place votes, 889), Oklahoma State (14, 829), Kansas (five, 772) and Arizona (three, 762) Joining Utah and Arizona in moving from the Pac-12 are Colorado (11th place, 400 points) and Arizona State (16th place, 141 points). The Big 12 is playing its first season without Texas and Oklahoma, whose departure to the Southeastern Conference set the stage for a redrawing of the college football landscape. Texas finished first in the conference last season (12-2, 8-1 Big 12), followed by Oklahoma State (10-4, 7-2) and Oklahoma (10-3, 7-2). Utah was 8-5 (5-4 Pac-12). Report: Vikings to re-sign RB Cam Akers, if he's healthy
The Minnesota Vikings plan to re-sign running back Cam Akers if he passes a physical, the Pioneer Press reported Tuesday. Akers, 25, sustained a season-ending Achilles injury last November. He also missed most of the 2021 season with a torn Achilles. He rushed 38 times for 138 yards and a touchdown in six games after joining the Vikings in a September 2023 trade with the Los Angeles Rams. Akers has rushed for 1,581 yards and 11 scores and caught 38 passes for 320 yards and one TD in 36 games (15 starts) with the Rams (2020-23) and Vikings. Los Angeles drafted him in the second round in 2020 and he helped them win Super Bowl LVI. The Vikings' current running backs roster includes Aaron Jones, Ty Chandler, Kene Nwangwu, DeWayne McBride and Myles Gaskin. --Field Level Media
Report: Pats LB Jahlani Tavai signing 3-year extension
The New England Patriots are in agreement with linebacker Jahlani Tavai on a three-year contract extension, ESPN reported Tuesday. The deal has a base value of $15 million and is worth up to $21 million with incentives, per the report. Tavai, 27, finished second on the Patriots with 110 tackles in 17 games (16 starts) last season. He has recorded 309 tackles, 4.5 sacks and three interceptions in 78 games (44 starts) with the Detroit Lions (2019-20) and Patriots. The Lions drafted Tavai with a second-round pick in 2019 out of Hawaii. --Field Level Media

Patrick Mahomes' logo to be featured on Texas Tech uniforms
Texas Tech will be the first college program to wear Patrick Mahomes' co-branded apparel under a 10-year deal with Adidas. The school announced the partnership with Adidas, which is now the official footwear, uniform, apparel and accessory partner of the Red Raiders. Financial terms were not released for the deal, which took effect Monday. The Mahomes "Gladiator" logo becomes the first Adidas athlete partner logo to be featured on official collegiate apparel. "I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for Texas Tech and I'm proud to have helped bring Red Raider Nation into the three-stripe fam," said Mahomes, who played at the school from 2014-16 before the Kansas City Chiefs selected him 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. As part of the deal, Texas Tech athletes will be able to join Adidas' NIL Ambassador Network, earning a percentage of for certain products and campaigns. --Field Level Media
Utah State to fire football coach Blake Anderson
Utah State gave football coach Blake Anderson notice that it intends to fire him following an investigation into actions he reportedly took in spring 2023, the university announced Tuesday. He has 14 days to respond to the notice of firing, per the stipulations of his employment agreement. Also dismissed were Jerry Bovee, a deputy athletic director who was interim AD in 2023, and Austin Albrecht, director of player development and community. OK State RB Ollie Gordon facing DUI, speeding charges
Oklahoma State star running back Ollie Gordon II was arrested Sunday on suspicion of DUI and speeding charges. Authorities said Gordon, 20, was pulled over on Interstate 35 near Moore, Okla., after being clocked at 82 mph and swerving in and out of traffic lanes. An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper detected "an odor associated with an alcoholic beverage" coming from the vehicle according to the incident report. Police also found two bottles of liquor in the vehicle. Gordon was taken to Cleveland County Jail after a breath test revealed a 0.11 blood alcohol content, over the legal limit for an adult younger than 21 years old, and also failed a second test while in custody with a 0.10 BAC. An Oklahoma State spokesperson told reporters that the university is aware of the situation but gave no further comment. Gordon was the 2023 Doak Walker Award winner as the nation's top running back. The All-American was also named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy vote after rushing for 1,732 yards and 21 touchdowns in 14 games. --Field Level Media

Utah names DC Morgan Scalley head coach in waiting
Utah announced Monday that longtime defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley will be the next head coach of the Utes when head coach Kyle Whittingham retires. Athletic director Mark Harlan said the program entered into a new employment agreement with Scalley last November. Scalley is entering his 17th year as an assistant on Utah's staff and ninth as DC. There is no timetable for Whittingham's retirement. "Coach Whittingham and I both strongly believe that that future lies with Morgan Scalley," Harlan said in the school release.
