SOUTH CAROLINA — A Newport man has been arrested in South Carolina. According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Samuel “Sammy” Crum, 33, of Jones Circle, Newport, was taken into custody by a deputy on Friday evening.

According to the BCSO report, a massage therapist on Hilton Head Island said that she was contacted by Crum via text message on Aug. 14 to schedule an appointment, indicating he had purchased a Groupon for the services.

Crum arranged to meet the massage therapist at her office for an appointment on Aug.15, and according to the victim, she contacted Crum to ask his whereabouts. He allegedly responded that he was in the parking lot, and when the massage therapist refuted his claim, Crum became upset for being accused of lying. He then sent her a text message asking her to call him, and he then allegedly sent her an inappropriate photo of a nude man.

The massage therapist blocked Crum’s cell phone number. She then received a text from a new number asking to make an appointment, and she was then sent an additional lewd image of a man. She did not respond and blocked that number.

The victim contacted the BCSO Saturday morning to report the incident and to press charges should the subject could be positively identified, according to the report. Twenty-four images were downloaded to a disk and submitted as evidence, per the report.

At 1:30 p.m. on Friday, deputies were called to an unrelated disturbance at 12 Park Lane in Hilton Head. During that investigation, they determined the suspect from the second incident was also Samuel Crum, and that he was currently at Hilton Head Hospital after having been transported there earlier that morning.

Deputies spoke with Crum at the hospital regarding both incidents. Officers confirmed the phone number that sent the text messages was Crum’s when he was seen twice declining a call from the deputy.

During a lengthy discussion, Crum said he found the images he sent on Google. He allegedly said he found an app on his phone that allowed him to text from fake telephone numbers, and he used a different number after he was blocked because he had to have “the last word” in the conversation.

Crum is facing a charge of unlawful communication, which will be handled by the Bluffton Magistrate Court. The bond for that charge is set at $2,125.

While Crum was being booked into the detention center, jail staff conducted a thorough search of his personal effects and found two loose Lortab pills, which is a Schedule II controlled substance, and two loose Xanax pills, which is a Schedule IV controlled substance. He claimed the pills belonged to his grandmother.

He is facing charges of possession of other controlled substances in Schedule I to Schedule IV, which is set for General Sessions Court. Bond on that charge is set at $2,500.

As of Monday afternoon, he was still listed as confined at the Beaufort County Detention Center.

The report also indicated deputies learned through NCIC that North Myrtle Beach Police Department has an active arrest warrant against Crum for defrauding an innkeeper.
