Reports: Vikings, QB J.J. McCarthy agree to 4-year deal
The Minnesota Vikings and quarterback J.J. McCarthy have agreed to a four-year, $21.85 million contract, two days before rookies are set to report to camp in Eagan, Minn., multiple outlets reported Friday. Per ESPN, the contract is fully guaranteed and includes a $12.71 million signing bonus and option for a fifth year. McCarthy was the No. 10 overall pick in April's draft after leading Michigan to the national championship. Cowboys' Stephen Jones: Upcoming contracts 'a challenge'
The Dallas Cowboys will need to write some big checks to hang on to quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge rusher Micah Parsons. And Stephen Jones, the team's chief operating officer and co-owner, said the Cowboys are crunching the numbers to try to make it work. "You know when you're talking about CeeDee and Dak and you know somebody like a Micah coming up," Jones told The Athletic's "Scoop City" podcast. "I mean you're talking about two players that aren't quarterbacks that feel like they ought to be a little bit like (the Vikings' Justin) Jefferson, the...

Bears QB Caleb Williams to play in preseason
While the plan is subject to change, the Chicago Bears plan to give rookie quarterback Caleb Williams live reps in preseason games next month. Head coach Matt Eberflus said Friday as veterans reported for the start of training camp that Williams, the first pick in April's NFL draft, will benefit from taking the majority of the snaps against Chicago's No. 1 defense. But the Bears are eyeing somewhere between 45 to 65 total reps for Williams in the preseason, starting with the NFL preseason opener Aug. 1 as part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame weekend. "Looking back at...
Green Bay Packers training camp capsule
GREEN BAY PACKERS (9-8) OPEN CAMP: July 21, Green Bay, Wisc. LAST YEAR: Apoplectic would describe the fan base of the Packers in the early part of last season as doubts about Jordan Love being an adequate heir to Aaron Rodgers ran rampant. Then he settled in and guided Green Bay back to the playoffs, getting a ninth regular-season win over the Chicago Bears in January to snag a wild-card spot. His receiving corps looked more than capable and occasionally lethal, but defensive shortcomings and breakdowns in the secondary forced head coach Matt LaFleur to hit reset on that side...

Cosby softball players earn All-Lakeway recognition
COSBY — When Mike Bryant coached the Cosby softball team, assistant J.R Jenkins would often remind their players of hitting advice from Braves legend Chipper Jones. “Not to hit the ball over the fence,” Bryant recited, “but to hit the ball through the fence.” In two straight at-bats against Cloudland this season, Ella Hicks and Shylee Weeks did exactly that, sending highlighter-yellow missiles through a breakaway fence in a tournament...
Halcomb leading young Lady Eagles into 2024 season
COSBY — For Taylor Halcomb and the Cosby volleyball program, things look quite a bit different this year than they have previously. Personally, Halcomb has seen several scheduling changes. She has let go of a hectic schedule that saw her driving back and forth to ETSU to finish her teaching degree and to fulfill student teaching requirements in Morristown, while also coaching two games and holding practice each week. ...
Saints OT Ryan Ramczyk (knee) to miss 2024 season
New Orleans Saints right tackle Ryan Ramczyk will miss the entire 2024 season after being placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list on Thursday. The move was expected with Ramczyk still experiencing knee issues. It ends his season because he's a vested veteran who was placed on the list prior to final roster cuts. Ramczyk, 30, was limited to 12 games in 2023 and underwent offseason knee surgery to repair significant cartilage damage. Ramczyk said late last season he has been dealing with the cartilage issues for the past three seasons. Earlier in his career, Ramczyk was one of...
