If you enjoyed reading it or are patiently waiting for a copy, many other authors have retold the classics. Please consider the following titles to be added to your to-read lists. </p><ul><li> “Demon Copperhead” by Barbara Kingsolver was influenced by Charles Dickens’ “David Copperfield.” Set in the American South, a young boy faces foster care, manual labor, poverty, and loss. Demon is determined not to give in or be beaten as he searches for his place in the world. </li><li> The flipside of “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen is told in “Longbourn” by Jo Baker. When a new footman is hired, the order of the household is threatened. Join the servants below stairs in their own triumphs and struggles in the Regency era of England. </li><li> The beloved story of Ma and her girls in ‘Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott is given a new perspective in “March” by Geraldine Brooks. The girls’ father is away, fighting for the Union cause; thoughts of his family back home drive him day and night. His story gives additional insight into love, family, and home. </li><li> “The Silence of the Girls” by Pat Barker tells the story of the Trojan War from the viewpoint of a woman who was taken into slavery. Raised as a Princess of Troy, Briseis becomes a prize of war for the great Greek warrior, Achilles. The horrors of war and those who survive it are chronicled in this variation of Homer’s “The Iliad.” </li><li> A reimagining of “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, “Beautiful Little Fools” by Jillian Cantor begins with the murder of Jay Gatsby. Three women hold clues to the perplexing life of the millionaire. The police must decipher each story as it is revealed to solve the mystery. </li><li> “The Hours” is a modernization of Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway.” Three women from different generations grapple with discontent in their lives. Beautifully written by Michael Cunningham, this novel exposes the complexities in each woman’s life. </li><li> Who was the woman who married William Shakespeare? “Hamnet” by Maggie O’Farrell tells the story of Agnes, Shakespeare’s wife, who lost a young son and lived much of her life apart from her husband. The prose is hauntingly magnificent and brings to life the horror of the plague. </li><li> Carlota spends her days on a stately island estate with her father, a scientist. When his employer’s son visits, chaos ensues. The experiments begin to change, as do the relationships within the island in “The Daughter of Dr. Moreau” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. </li></ul><p> Manistee County Library has six locations in Arcadia, Bear Lake, Kaleva, Manistee, Onekama&nbsp;and Wellston.
