(Peter Muller/Getty Images/Image Source) </figcaption></figure> LUDINGTON — The <a href="https://masoncountymihistory.org/" rel="nofollow"> Mason County Historical Society’s annual gala </a> is expected to take place on Sept. 14 at the historic Stearns Hotel in Ludington. The event celebrates Mason County's history, featuring performances, a gourmet dinner, auction items and entertainment. Rebecca Berringer, Mason County Historical Society executive director, said in a news release that the gala is “a way to share the history of Mason County with the community.” "Preserving history helps unite our community by providing a sense of belonging and continuity. We all leave a legacy, and our mission at the Mason County Historical Society is to preserve that legacy for future generations,” Berringer said. “By understanding where we came from and the challenges faced by those before us, we can better chart the course for our future." A highlight of the evening is a skit written by Rick Plummer about the tall-tale hero Ossawald Crumb. The performance brings to life the stories of the axe-toting lumberjack as envisioned by Robert Lyon Stearns, son of lumber and coal baron Justus Stearns, and brought to life by the artist Fletcher Charles Ransom. James Jensen, Mason County Historical Society board president, will present Stearns’ history and reveal more about Ossawald Crumb. This presentation will provide guests with an opportunity to learn about the Stearns family's legacy while enjoying an evening in the very hotel they created. "History has always been my passion," Jensen said in a news release ahead of the gala. "It's not just about preserving the past, but understanding how it shapes our present and future. I'm excited to share these stories that have had such an impact on our community." The evening also includes music and dancing after dinner. Guests are encouraged to dress by the decade.
