(Submitted photo/Elaine Maylen) </figcaption></figure> The Portage Lake Garden Club recently hosted Charles St. Charles, of Cadillac, a naturalist and renowned northern Michigan filmmaker. He is recognized for his work with Eastern bluebirds. The Michigan Bluebird Society partnered with him to create a film highlighting the life cycle of the Eastern bluebird. In his presentation to the club, St. Charles combined sections of the film with a slideshow to illustrate how bluebirds mate, build nests, lay and hatch eggs, and raise their young. “I was enthralled learning about these birds. We saw up close how a female uses her wing motion to make a comfortable depression in the grass for hold the eggs and saw the male attentively feeding the female while she’s on the nest," club member Mary Manning said. The club learned how human intervention has played a major role in assisting the once-threatened birds make a comeback. St. Charles explained the filming process, including how he has adapted cameras for the unique needs of filming inside bird houses. </div></body>
