(Nick Cooper/News Advocate) </figcaption></figure> With a bit of chill in the air it is officially time for fall sports to make its appearance. <a href="https://www.mhsaa.com/schools/benziecentral/boys/varsity/soccer" rel="nofollow"> Manistee’s boys soccer </a> team is beginning to round into mid-season form. The Mariners hosted Shelby on Sept. 4, which saw Manistee dominate their opponent in a victory, 4-0. “(The) guys played a well-organized game overall with great effort and showed a lot of heart through moments of the game,” said Manistee head soccer coach Brandon Prince. The Manistee defense was too much for Shelby to handle as the Mariners suffocated the Shelby offense on each possession. The Mariners' <a href="https://www.manisteenews.com/sports/article/manistee-boys-soccer-traveled-big-rapids-19719812.php" rel="nofollow"> Layne Piper </a> played solid in goal earning his first career shutout while making just two stops on the night. “Layne played solid in net by managing long balls into space and winning balls on set pieces,” said Prince. Manistee was led in scoring by <a href="https://www.manisteenews.com/sports/article/manistee-mariners-soccer-team-battles-suttons-bay-19665435.php" rel="nofollow"> Nolan Dalke, </a> who netted two goals. Juan Burnado also contributed a goal. Max Sharp and Mason Robinson each provided an assist. “(The) defense established a great shape early in the match and kept their intensity up through some long balls from the Shelby offense,” said Prince. With the win, Manistee evens their record at 3-3. The 2023&nbsp;Manistee soccer team ended the season with a district finals loss to Fremont and this year’s team carries over multiple athletes who have their eye on improving both their season and postseason records. Given the type of defense that the Mariners have played this season, coupled with their ability to put the ball in the net, there is reason to believe that the Mariners will be well-prepared the district finals this year. If the Mariners are able to sully opposing teams' offense on their side of the pitch, Dalke could be key difference maker for Manistee.
