SAVOY — It was a good day to be a Monticello Sages golfer. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams claimed an Illini Prairie Conference title Wednesday afternoon at the University of Illinois Blue Course, both in historic fashion.

This is the eighth year of the IPC, but it’s the first time there’s been a girls’ golf conference championship, and the Sages were the inaugural winners with a team score of 357, breaking Monticello’s 18-hole school record set in 2013 by two strokes. Macy Printy led the team with an 86 to place third individually. Also contributing to the team score and earning All-IPC honors were Megan Allen (88, fifth), Claire Foster (91, sixth) and Rachel Ross (92, eighth). While their scores weren’t used, Isabella Beery’s 93 and Cate Sanders’ 94 were good enough to nab the ninth and 10th all-conference spots.

The boys didn’t have all six golfers earn medals, but their day was just as impressive. Monticello won its second IPC crown with a team score of 296, which broke the program’s 18-hole record set earlier this season by seven strokes. Maddux Quick won the individual competition with a 3-under-par 69, just two shots ahead of runner-up teammate Andrew Neef. Kross Reynolds took fourth place with a 75, and Cordell Chupp (81), Connor Kuntz (84) and Gehrig Quick (86) just missed All-IPC recognition.

The St. Thomas More girls’ team settled for second place, just nine strokes behind Monticello, with Ashley Wells winning the individual crown after shooting a 74. STM’s Keagan Markun shot a 94 to tie for 10th. Prairie Central finished fifth as a team, and Rantoul was sixth. Ally Wright led the Eagles with a fourth-place 87.

Prairie Central earned runner-up honors in the boys’ team competition, trailing Monticello by 14 strokes. St. Joseph-Ogden took fourth, Rantoul placed fifth and St. Thomas more was seventh. The Hawks had two golfers earn all-conference nods, Easton Friedman in third with a 72 and Tucker Stoller tied for fourth with a 75.

Vikings sweep Chargers on tennis court

DANVILLE — The Danville girls’ tennis team had no problem defending its home court on Wednesday, cruising to a 9-0 victory over the Centennial with each match ending in straight sets.

Anna Houpt set the tone at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, followed by wins from Reese Rundle (6-0, 6-0), Aliya Morgan (6-0, 6-0), Samantha Brown (6-3, 6-1), Maya Towne (6-1, 6-0) and Lexi Foley (6-1, 6-4). Houpt and Rundle teamed up to earn an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Brown and Morgan won by the same score, and Towne and Foley won 8-2.

Conquering Riders earn shutout with big 2nd half

ARTHUR — Heading into the halftime break, it was still anybody’s game, but the Arthur Christian boys’ soccer team left no doubt after exploding for five second-half goals to take a 6-0 win over Decatur MacArthur/Eisenhower on Wednesday.

Joe Theriault netted a pair of goals to lead the offensive attack. Adding to the scoring barrage were Mykyta Walsh, Gideon Wright, James Lee and Lawson Lehman with one goal apiece. Lee also recorded eight saves in net before giving way to Bradley Lacine, who saved one shot, and combining for the shutout.

Vikings hold off Tigers’ comeback effort

DANVILLE — The Danville girls’ flag football team earned a 20-8 home win over Urbana on Wednesday.

But it wasn’t without a little late-game drama.

The Tigers got on the board when Bailey Russell connected with Zaniyah Ward for their first touchdown, and Just’us Jones ran it in for the two-point conversion. Trailing late and needing a big play, Evelyn Hernandez came up with an interception and a big return to better Urbana’s chances at completing the comeback, but it was too little too late.

Bunnies fall just short in final Rivals Cup game

PEOTONE — After besting Illinois Lutheran 7-0 and tying Chicago Christian 2-2 in its first two Rivals Cup games, the Fisher/Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley boys’ soccer team fell 1-0 to Coal City on Wednesday night.

The score still showed zeros at halftime, but Coal City found the back of the net in the 51st minute, and that’s all it needed to come away with the win. The Bunnies had three shots on goal, but none got through, and goalie Parker Baillie had nine saves.
