    Thursday's prep highlights: Claybrooke wins title; Bulldogs, Sages advance to sectionals

    In boys’ golf

    Class 2A Danville Regional

    At Danville. While Mt. Zion won the team championship with a score of 310, Mahomet-Seymour and Monticello also punched their tickets to next week’s sectional with respective scores of 315 and 328 at Turtle Run Golf Course. Reis Claybrooke led the Bulldogs with a round of 76, good to win an individual title after winning a playoff with Mt. Zion’s Tommy Whitley. Kelton Hennessy tied for third with a 77, and Jackson Bohm tied for sixth with a 78. The Sages’ Andrew Neef also shot a 77, followed by teammate Maddux Quick with an 81. Danville finished eighth as a team (380), and Centennial took ninth (384). Area golfers advancing to sectionals as individuals include Danville’s Brody Boyd (78), Urbana’s Lucas Henderson (78) and Centennial’s Madden Ritter (85).

    In volleyball

    Armstrong-Potomac 2, Iroquois West 0. Carly Grant led the way for the Trojans (12-10-1) in a 25-15, 25-10 win over the Raiders (1-17) with eight aces and nine assists. Tinley Parkerson added four aces and four assists, and Isabel Bullington had six kills.

    Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond 2, Villa Grove 0. The Knights (14-4) improved to 6-0 in Lincoln Prairie Conference play with a 25-17, 25-18 win over the Blue Devils (6-12). Savannah Butcher led ALAH’s offense with six kills, followed by Summer Melton with five kills and three aces. Annabelle Vanausdoll and Mackenzie Condill had five digs apiece, and Alayna Plank put up 18 assists. Jobella Crafton led Villa Grove with seven kills, four digs and three blocks, and Madison Hinds had four blocks of her own.

    Champaign Central 2, Bloomington 0. Bridget Cassady‘s 10-kill, 11-dig double-double paced the Maroons (16-10) to a 25-20, 25-14 victory. Sienna Zapparoli added seven kills, Grace Bandy had nine digs and Prestyn Roberts had four aces.

    Chrisman 2, Schlarman 0. The Cardinals (10-6) took care of business against the Hilltoppers (1-14), winning in convincing fashion on the road 25-12, 25-15 to reach double-digit victories on the season.

    Cissna Park 2, Hoopeston Area 0. Another day, another sweep for the Timberwolves (19-2), who took a 25-7, 25-17 win over the Cornjerkers (5-13). Addison Lucht tallied seven kills and seven aces, and Josie Neukomm added five kills. Ella Schluter and Mady Marcott combined for 18 assists. Addy Kelnhofer had eight kills to lead Hoopeston Area.

    Danville 2, Urbana 0. The Vikings (6-16) dominated the first set 25-4 before a drastic shift in momentum led them to an extra-points 27-25 win in the second. Despite the loss, Elizabeth Lange had two blocks, Janasia Dillion put down four kills and Omega Lugano served up four aces for the Tigers (4-7).

    Fremont 2, Fisher 0. A couple close sets didn’t fall the way the Bunnies (5-17) wanted, even with 11 digs from Avery Carleton, three aces from Paige Hott and three blocks from Sadie Bruggman.

    Georgetown-Ridge Farm 2, Oakwood 0. Milee Ellis and Katie Wersich combined for 13 kills to lead the Buffaloes (9-8). Rubyrae Fraser Soule had 13 assists, and Addison Spesard had 11 digs. Bella Bradford and Mady Nicoson combined for 11 kills in the Comets’ (4-12) 25-20, 25-20 loss. Quinn Sperry had 13 assists and eight digs, and Kendyl Rogers added 10 digs.

    Greenview 2, Arthur Christian 0. The Conquering Riders (15-5) came close in both sets but ultimately fell just short 25-22, 25-23. Evonda Yoder led a defensive effort with 10 digs.

    Heritage 2, Okaw Valley 1. It was close throughout the evening, and it came down to extra points, but the Hawks (14-10-1) pulled through for a 22-25, 25-21, 26-24 comeback win.

    Judah Christian 2, Deland-Weldon 0. The Tribe (11-8) won a competitive match over the Eagles (5-14) 25-15, 29-27. Mackensie Jackson‘s 21 assists led the charge, along with Avoni Kelly‘s nine kills and Riley Pritts' three aces.

    Lexington 2, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 0. The Falcons (10-7) couldn’t get into a groove, falling 25-21, 25-15. Londyn Roderick still racked up 10 assists, Maci Lindelof had nine digs and Sophia Ray added three aces.

    Mahomet-Seymour 2, Mattoon 0. Easy does it for the Bulldogs (18-2), taking a 25-20, 25-18 victory. Ellie Barker’s seven kills and Erin Dallas’ 13 assists paced the winning effort.

    St. Joseph-Ogden 2, Rantoul 1. After two close sets, the Spartans (11-10) ran away with the third to best the Eagles (9-10) 25-27, 25-22, 25-16. Tinley Ideus led SJ-O’s attack with 15 kills and nine digs. Ava Seggebruch recorded seven kills, nine digs and four aces. Olivia Learned put up 14 assists, Katie Ericksen and Thea Smith combined for 21 digs and Reese Wheatley blocked three attempts. Josie Roseman paced Rantoul with seven kills and 20 digs. Airiana Bell had six kills and 13 digs, and Lauren Herbert added 19 assists.

    South Newton 2, Milford 0. Tough night for the Bearcats (4-15), as they couldn’t get much going in a 25-20, 25-13 loss.

    Unity 2, Paxton-Buckley-Loda 1. The Rockets (18-9-1) ultimately came out on top in this back-and-forth conference battle with the Panthers (7-10) 25-22, 20-25, 25-16. Maegan Rothe and Lindy Bates combined for 13 kills for Unity, Chloey Duitsman had 17 digs and Lauren Shaw had 14 assists. Aubrey Busboom shined in PBL's loss, with her 19 assists moving her to 1,686 for her career to break the school's all-time record. Ellie Dirks added 11 kills, Taryn Rock had 12 digs and Morgan Goss had three blocks.

    Watseka 2, Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 0. The Warriors (19-5) had to earn the first set 26-24 and cruised in the second 25-15 to best the Blue Devils (10-5). Lauren Tegtmeyer smashed 13 kills, and Ella Smith added nine to lead the winning offense. Noelle Schroeder dug 25 balls, and Smith had another 16 digs. Christa Holohan set up her teammates nicely with 27 assists. In the loss, Reis McFarland recorded nine kills, Macy Danner had 18 digs and Ella Acton had four blocks.

    Westville 2, Salt Fork 0. The Tigers (21-2) had their way with the Storm (12-6) 25-12, 25-10. Lainey Wichtowski put up 18 assists, and Ella Miller had nine kills. Maddie Appl was all over the stat sheet with seven kills, six blocks and five digs. Addi Williams led Salt Fork with 10 digs, and Ava Ringstrom and Maya Smith combined for another 11.

    In boys’ soccer

    Arthur Christian 4, Meridian 3. James Lee’s eight saves were just enough for the Conquering Riders (5-4-2) to pick up the win. Mykyta Walsh scored twice, and Joe Theriault and Trevor Heldt added one goal apiece. Theriault, William Goff and Spencer Kelmel all had an assist.

    Blue Ridge/Deland-Weldon 5, Mt. Pulaski 2. Nils Pfaff was the go-to scorer for the Knights (2-6-2), and Indra Nolan and Devin Wrestler recorded assists.

    Oakwood/Salt Fork 4, Georgetown-Ridge Farm/Westville 3. With the win, Oakwood/Salt Fork (17-2) clinched its third consecutive outright Vermilion Valley Conference championship. Mason Swartz scored twice in the winning effort, and Pedro Rangel IV and Macen Phillips each scored once. Phillips added two assists, and Pedro Rangel V had one. Jakob Rupp saved seven shots to earn the victory in net. Simonas Ankstutis found the back of the net three times for the Buffaloes (5-7), who also got 11 saves from goalie Matthew Darling, and they got one assist each from Landon Heck and Elijah Jones.

    Peoria 3, Champaign Central 2. The Maroons (3-9-1) started a second-half comeback after going down 3-1 at halftime, but it was too little too late. Damien Hinds and Julien Moss scored for Central, and Moss and Roan Sharma added assists.

    Peoria Richwoods 3, Urbana 2. The struggles for the Tigers (9-6-1) continued, dropping the third game in their last four tries. Anthony Becerril and Lemex Ondongo scored for Urbana, Arlin Orr dished out an assist and Jevan Juday had four saves.

    Pleasant Plains 6, Monticello 0. The Sages (5-11-1) were within striking distance at halftime, only down 2-0, but Pleasant Palins pulled away in the second half. Dallas Glauner still came away with 11 saves for Monticello.

    St. Joseph-Ogden 6, Rantoul/Paxton-Buckley-Loda 1. Another big night for the Spartans (16-2-1), getting three goals from Zach Harper, two from Tyler Hess and one from Alex Acosta in the win over the Eagles (5-8-3). Acosta also had two assists, and Logan Mills and Yadi Acosta each had one. Jaxson Colvin saved nine shots in net.

    Uni High 13, St. Teresa 4. The offense exploded for the Illineks (14-6), led by Shabi Prasanth‘s six goals and one assist. Aiden Kim added a pair of goals, and Tristen Ting, Yuto Inoue, Robert Tu, Lucas Braun and Henry Wang each had one. Wang tallied the most assists with four, followed by Kim and Tu with two apiece and one each from Josh Persiani, Frank Hechler and Ting. Goalie Muhammad Iftikhar had five saves in the win.

    Watseka/Milford 9, Iroquois West 0. Leading the offensive outburst for the Warriors (13-3) against the Raiders (4-14) were Santiago Solorzano and Owen Avelar, who both recorded hat tricks. Narciso Solorzano had two goals and one assist, and Jose Tobar had one goal and two assists. Aiden Bell and Logan Zaragoza each added one assist.

    In girls’ tennis

    Mahomet-Seymour 9, Urbana 0. Earning singles wins for the Bulldogs were Eliza Agate (6-1, 6-1), Charlotte Mercer (6-0, 6-1), Ashley Shoaf (6-2, 6-1), Violet Franklin (6-3, 6-0), Evie Hillard (6-4, 7-6) and Lillian Meyer (6-1, 6-3). Emmie Flores and Courtney Gowler won in doubles play for M-S (6-4, 6-3), as did the team of Ava Gilbert and Caroline Aden (6-0, 6-0) and the pair of Meyer and Harper Young (6-1, 6-1).

    St. Joseph-Ogden 5, Centennial 4. It went down to the wire, but the Spartans came out on top. The teams split the singles matches, with Samantha Kelso (6-6, 7-5), Olivia Getty (6-3, 6-4) and Avarie Dietiker (6-4, 8-6) winning for SJ-O and Ria Modi (6-3, 6-2), Anna Williams (6-3, 6-1) and Allison Hemming (6-1, 6-2) winning for the Chargers. Lily Rice and MaKennah Hamilton won for SJ-O in doubles play, as did Ella Dieteker and Sara Kearney. Asma Cheema and Hemming got Centennial’s lone doubles win.

    St. Thomas More 5, Watseka 2. Catherine Ra (8-3), Luciana Grant (8-2) and Lauren Woldoff (8-4) all notched wins in singles play for the Sabers. Ra and Grant teamed up for an 8-5 win in No. 1 doubles, and Woldoff and Lydia Case took an 8-3 win in No. 2 doubles. Annika Greene earned the Warriors’ lone singles win (8-7), and she and Lili Sorensen came away with a doubles victory (8-6).
