Victims in fatal pedestrian crash in Weyers Cave identified as 83- and 72-year-old Staunton women

WEYERS CAVE — Virginia State Police have identified the two pedestrians killed in a crash Saturday night on Route 11.

A 2003 Dodge Caravan was heading northbound on Route 11 when police said the driver was unable to avoid striking two pedestrians who were crossing the highway approximately a half mile north of Weyers Cave Road in Augusta County.

Police say Opal C. Nelson, 83, and Carolyn M. Childress, 72, both of Staunton, died at the scene. According to the police, neither was wearing reflective clothing.

The driver of the Caravan, Danielle N. Bennington, 39, of Mount Crawford, and a passenger, Joshua P. Compton, 37, both suffered minor injuries, police said. Both were wearing seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation.

Following the crash, Virginia State Police also arrested Kristopher E. Nelson, 41, of Staunton. According to police, he refused to leave the scene and has been charged with disorderly conduct, misdemeanor obstruction, and two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer.
