VERONA — An elderly pedestrian was struck by a car Tuesday morning in Augusta County and killed, according to Virginia State Police.

A 2015 Honda Civic was headed eastbound on Quick’s Mill Road, near the intersection with Lee Street, when it was unable to avoid striking a woman crossing the road.

Police said the fatality took place at about 5:30 a.m.

The pedestrian, Betty H. Beck, 77, of Verona, died at the scene. Police said she was wearing dark clothing.

The driver of the Honda, Sulay L. Alonso, 27, of Verona, remained at the scene. She was charged with driving without a valid operator’s license.

    The crash remains under investigation.

Tuesday's fatality took place about two weeks after two woman were killed Aug. 17 on Lee Highway (U.S. 11) in Weyers Cave while attempting to cross the road.
