ALBEMARLE COUNTY — Police said two people were recently killed in separate crashes in Albemarle County.

On Thursday, the Albemarle County Police Department reported a two-door coupe was involved in a three-vehicle crash in the area of Rio Road East and Hillsdale Drive, killing Kenneth E. Choloski II, 32, of Earlysville. Police said Choloski, who was not wearing a seat belt, was a passenger. He died at the scene. The unidentified driver was taken to UVA Health in Charlottesville with serious injuries, police said.

Two occupants of the first vehicle struck were treated for minor injuries. Police said there were no injuries to the driver and passenger in the second vehicle that was hit.

The crash remains under investigation by the Albemarle County Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Team.

On Saturday afternoon, Virginia State Police said an elderly man was killed on Interstate 64 near mile marker 124. Police said the man, who was driving a 2015 Toyota Tacoma, had entered an eastbound ramp onto I-64 at Richmond Road in Albemarle County when his vehicle left the ramp. The vehicle struck a sign, crossed the onramp from westbound Richmond Road, and then hit a guardrail. After hitting the guardrail, the Toyota went down an embankment and landed on its passenger side in a creek, police said.

The driver, Oakey E. Shifflett, 83, of Palmyra, was taken to an area hospital where he died, police said. A medical emergency is being looked at as a potential cause for the crash, which remains under investigation.
