Ohio Supreme Court Justice Melody Stewart was the guest speaker at the annual Sandusky County Bar Association Law Day, for which the theme was “Voices of Democracy,” a topic she felt was salient in the political time.

“A democratic government is, of course, a government by the people and for the people. Ours is a government of majority rule. And we have rejected the notion that anything different would work better for us. But we still need to find ways to work better together for the sake of all,” Stewart, the first Black woman elected to the Ohio Supreme Court, told the Law Day guests. “Law Day is a reminder to us, in the legal profession, to lead the way in promoting equity, civility and collaboration; to join in fostering respect for every person; and to ensure that we use the law to advance real equality and real representation for all.”

The group also awarded scholarships and their Liberty Bell Award.

I followed up the event with a frank discussion about recent Ohio elections, read it all here .

Good news to end the week:

Blood drive today and area health care is looking good

Area healthcare quality gets a good rating, and there's also a blood drive today.

I have a crazy job. When it comes to lead times for a blood drive, I put it on my schedule as a recurring calendar event, then look for one, if I have an opening. So if you are like me, this is your opportunity to give blood.

The American Red Cross is in need of blood and will have a blood drive in the Magruder Hospital Conference Center between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday.

Appointments are still available. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS, or visiting www.redcrossblood.org . Nearby blood drives can always be found by going to redcrossblood.org and entering your ZIP code.

ProMedica Memorial has also been given top rating by national nonprofit watchdog, The Leapfrog Group.

ProMedica Memorial Hospital earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from Leapfrog. The group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“We are honored to receive this recognition,” said Jodi Rucker, the president, vice president of patient care services and CNO, ProMedica Memorial Hospital. “Each and every day our staff continues to be dedicated to creating a culture of safety while providing high-quality care to the patients and families that we serve.”
