The Village of Gibsonburg welcomed a special sculpture to The Logyard Park on West Madison Street on Monday as part of the effort to redevelop the downtown site of a what was an abandoned and blighted gas station.

"Spirit" is an 8-foot high, hand-carved wood bear sculpture that will honor Golden Bears past, present and future.

"Spirit" was chosen by judges in a naming contest this summer. Sharon Sutton submitted the name because “Gibsonburg has always been known for their spirit in the schools and the community.”

Sculptor Kris Connors of Custom Sculpture in Nickelsville, Virginia, created "Spirit" out of white pine using chainsaws and hand-held carving tools. The sculpture arrived Monday and was affixed to a poured concrete platform in the center of The Logyard.
