🏘 Property values jump in Sandusky, Ottawa counties

    By Roger LaPointe, Fremont News-Messenger,

    Good morning, Sandusky County.

Expect little fluffy clouds today with a high of 74 degrees and a low of 62 degrees tonight.

Tuesday evening there was a tornado warning issued. I don't know what was different about this one. I started getting a lot of calls about it, from across both Sandusky and Ottawa counties. There was clearly a misunderstanding by readers of social media sites, but maybe also from other sources.

I urge readers to look up recognized news sources, and not just use the warnings from social media sites. They are notoriously inaccurate. As a newspaper, with a website, more and more often we are also digitally covering breaking news in real time. In this case, the Sandusky County Emergency Management Agency said there was the possibility of a funnel cloud, but it did not turn into a tornado, as some social media sites claimed. The same goes for Ottawa County. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office also said there was not a tornado.

Property values jump in Sandusky, Ottawa counties

Some Ottawa County properties increase 100% in value over three years ago.

Auditors from both counties pointed out that property valuations are available on their websites, but the current tax rates listed there are based on the old valuations and new tax rates will not be added until after the November elections and be set by the state.

Sandusky County conducted its triennial valuation and is letting residents know their properties' updated market values. Sandusky County last completed its full appraisal of the real estate values in 2021. That was when each property was individually inspected physically.

"We have an overall average of 23%," Sandusky County Auditor Jerri Miller said. "Some neighborhoods have gone up more than that and some less than that."

Ottawa County Auditor Jennifer J. Widmer said she saw a 33% increase in market values. Widmer added that several areas saw valuations increase by 100%. Properties were reviewed by appraisers.

The auditors said they expect to have new tax rates in December.
