Fremont police closed the case last week on the killing of Donald Dyson-Petrucci, 30, of Washington Township, Ohio. Judd Campbell, 31, of Fremont, pleaded guilty to murder charges Sept. 19, accepting life imprisonment.

Prior to the closing of the case, records with details were not available.

Fremont Police Chief Wensinger commented on the case.

“There are a lot of moving parts,” Wensinger said prior to the closing of the case, adding that there was only one suspect.

Campbell accepted a plea deal prior to the case going to a jury trial. The case had already been to the Sandusky County grand jury for murder charges.

Campbell was arrested for homicide on Feb. 17 in the stabbing death of Dyson-Petrucci, who was found on the 300 block of May Street in Fremont.

Fremont Police officers responded to a request for help with an unresponsive person at about 4:39 p.m. Dyson-Petrucci was deceased when police arrived.

According to the police narrative, “Judd admitted that he stabbed Donald Multiple times. Judd even demonstrated to me how he stabbed Donald.”

Officers had responded to a call “for an unresponsive subject stuffed in a box.”

A bloody knife was found at the scene. It, along with other items and evidence found at the scene, was sent for analysis to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The Fremont Police Department was also assisted by the Sandusky County Coroner’s Office.

Sandusky County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Laura Alkire commented on the sentence.

“As a plea offer, we offered an agreed sentence of life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 17 years,” said.

The original indictment was for five charges: murder while committing an F1 or F2 violent offense, abuse of a corpse, murder, felonious assault with the victim serious harmed, tampering with evidence, and possessing criminal tools.

Campbell pled guilty to three charges.

“The State dismissed the felony murder/felonious assault charges and the tampering with evidence charge,” Alkire said.

She explained the sentence. Campbell was charged with murder, for the purposeful killing of Donald Dyson-Petrucci in Count One and Murder, the death of Donald Dyson-Petrucci, “as the proximate cause of the defendant committing a felony, in Count Two. While the defendant could be convicted of both, the defendant can only be sentenced to one sentence of life with the possibility of parole after 15 years. Similarly, Count Three of the indictment was Felonious Assault. Felonious Assault merges at the time of sentencing as well.”

Alkire also explained the charge for Gross abuse of a corpse was for moving the body, and the knife used in the killing was considered the criminal tool.

Possible recidivism was also considered in sentencing.

“At the bond hearing, I represented to the judge, based on my review of the defendant’s prior criminal history, that he’s been to prison before, he was released on parole, violated parole, and then he had a prior failure to appear,” Alkire had previously said.
