A Powerball player checked his numbers right before leaving town and “couldn’t believe” what he was seeing.

A few weeks later, four family members from across the country came together to claim the $1 million prize , the Virginia Lottery said in an Aug. 12 news release.

Daniel Ceroni of Henrico, Virginia, bought the ticket that matched five white balls but missed the red Powerball in the June 22 drawing, lottery officials said.

It was one of two tickets in the country to win $1 million in the drawing , McClatchy News previously reported.

Ceroni agreed to evenly split the prize with family from Washington, Colorado and Virginia, according to the Virginia lottery.

When he bought the ticket at a grocery store, he had the computer randomly select his numbers, lottery officials said.

Nobody hit the top prize in that drawing, but a Powerball player holding a ticket sold in Pennsylvania won the nearly $214 million jackpot Aug. 12, McClatchy News reported.

Henrico is part of the Richmond metropolitan area.

To score the jackpot in the Powerball , a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online .

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
