    Breakfast chain marked up for ‘non-food safe ice’ on items: Sanitation scores (Aug. 20)

    The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.

    Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

    You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated .

    Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of Aug. 14-20.

    Wake County sanitation scores

    The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that at least 100 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 14-20.

    ▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

    ▪ Two restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

    Himalayan Grill & Bar (1207 Kildaire Farm Rd Suite J in Cary) received a score of 87.5% during an inspection on Aug. 14.

    • The restaurant was in violation of 17 standards. Of these, 11 were considered critical violations.

    • Critical violations included containers of raw chicken stored above containers of ready-to-eat foods in the freezer, potato slicer and cutting boards found with food residue and a bottle of burn cream and a box of urinal cleaning tablets stored on a shelf above foods.

    • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

    Sizzlin Stir Fry (8521 Brier Creek Pkwy #117 in Raleigh) received a score of 87% during an inspection on Aug. 14.

    • The restaurant was in violation of 13 standards. Of these, seven were considered critical violations.

    • Critical violations included raw fish and chicken stored above cooked foods and an employee rinsing a dirty knife without cleaning or sanitizing.

    • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

    • The restaurant previously scored 93.5% in January and 94% in May 2023.

    Durham County sanitation scores

    The Durham County inspection management system shows 28 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 14-20.

    • Most restaurants received an A grade.

    • One restaurant received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

    IHOP (1821 N Pointe Dr. in Durham) received a score of 89.5% during an inspection on Aug. 15.

    • The restaurant was in violation of 12 standards. Of these, four were considered critical violations.

    • Critical violations included foods left uncovered in the freezer with “non-food safe ice forming on items,” a “heavily soiled” cutting board and food storage containers that were visibly dirty without being cleaned between uses.

    • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

    • The restaurant previously scored 94.5% in June and 91% in February.

    Orange County sanitation scores

    The Orange County inspection management system shows that 14 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 14-20.

    ▪ All restaurants received an A grade.

    The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 16 restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 14-20.

    The Chatham County inspections management system shows that seven restaurant inspections were completed Aug. 14-20.
