Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer, has arrived — even though here in North Carolina, we’re stuck in Second Summer for a while longer before we get Actual Fall.

Whether you’re eager to greet the forthcoming changes or mourning the loss of the season, many in the Triangle may be planning to commemorate the holiday with food and drink.

Here’s what you need to know about local grocery and liquor stores before and on Sept. 2.

Are Triangle liquor stores open on Labor Day 2024?

North Carolina governmental leaders approved a change to the law earlier this year. Now, local ABC boards can choose whether to stay open for holidays including Labor Day, New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July.

However, Raleigh-area ABC stores will not take advantage of the change. Stores in Wake , Durham , Orange , Chatham and Johnston counties are closed Monday — and Sunday, as usual.

So if you need to stock the bar, plan ahead.

Beer and wine may still be purchased at grocery and convenience stores open on Sept. 2.

Many area grocery stores will remain open Monday, but some will close early.
