A Sanderson High School student faces criminal charges after allegedly bringing a firearm onto a schoolbus this week, Raleigh police said Wednesday.

According to a news release, the juvenile, who police declined to name because of their age, reportedly brought the gun onto the bus sometime Monday. School administrators reported the incident to police the next day, the release said.

Police declined to share the juvenile’s age or gender.

“The Raleigh Police Department encourages everyone to remove firearms from their vehicles and lock their doors,” the release said. “We are also encouraging everyone to keep their firearms secure in their homes to prevent them from falling into the hands of those who are not supposed to have them.”

Police did not say if they believed the firearm had been stolen. Wake County Public School System officials could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
