A Breadman’s employee is safe after a man fired a gun while stealing a pickup truck from the South Elliott Road restaurant, police said.

The stolen truck was found Monday afternoon in Durham, but the case remains under investigation, police said in a news release.

The employee confronted the suspect, who was stealing from the truck in the parking lot outside Breadman’s, located at 261 S. Elliott Road, around 8 a.m. Monday, Chapel Hill police said in a news release.

The suspect fired one shot and fled the scene in the truck, which has a Breadman’s decal on it, they said.

The employee was not injured, police said.

The truck — a silver 2021 Chevrolet Silverado — was found abandoned later Monday near Duke Street and Morehead Avenue in Durham. Investigators did not provide more information about a possible suspect.

Anyone with information about the carjacking can call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760 (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday). Callers can leave an anonymous tip at Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crimestoppers at 919-942-7515 or online at chapelhillcrimestoppers.com .
