The last time North Carolina and Duke faced off in football, UNC was ranked. What proceeded was a double-overtime affair on homecoming weekend last November, with scores of Tar Heel fans rushing the field following the 47-45 win.

The mood around the North Carolina program is much more muted heading into this year’s Victory Bell matchup.

Despite UNC’s historical dominance with five consecutive wins in the series, Duke (4-0) is the team riding momentum from an undefeated start. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels (3-1) are still reeling from an embarrassing 70-50 loss to James Madison.

UNC’s defense struggled mightily against JMU, giving up 388 passing yards and a program-record 70 points.

In contrast, Duke’s defense under coach Manny Diaz has been strong , allowing just 15.3 points per game and ranking second in the ACC with 259.3 yards allowed per game.

“Manny’s always gonna do great on defense,” UNC coach Mack Brown said. “They’re leading the country in tackles for loss and they’re also number two in sacks. So with our inexperience up front, we’re playing our third quarterback in four games — we’ve got our hands full.”

North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton (28) breaks away from James Madison defensive back Chris Shearin (10) for a 28-yard touchdown in the first quarter on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. Robert Willett/rwillett@newsobserver.com

The Tar Heels will rely on running back Omarion Hampton, who leads the ACC with 138.8 rushing yards per game. No other individual in the conference averages more than 107.

“He’s one of the top backs in the country,” Diaz said, later adding, “If he’s in a lot of one-on-one type situations, you’re going to [have] a problem. Don’t let him get going.

That’s easy to say. That’s hard to do.”

Duke’s defensive front, with help from linebackers Alex Howard and Tre Freeman, will need to contain Hampton.

And on offense, Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy — who has thrown for 11 touchdowns with a 64.3% completion rate — will be a likely tandem with wide receiver Jordan Moore. Moore has 24 catches for 340 yards and three touchdowns, making him a key player against UNC’s shaky (at best) pass defense.
