Saturday was a white-knuckle day of college football for ranked teams, with most of them finding a way to escape with wins.
Four games involving teams in the Associated Press Top 25 went to overtime. Three of those games involved top-10 teams.
Four other games involving ranked were decided by three points or fewer.
When the dust settled, only four ranked teams lost games this week as No. 3 Oregon edged No. 2 Ohio State, 32-31; No. 13 LSU rallied late to beat No. 9 Mississippi 29-26 in overtime; and No. 1 Texas routed No. 18 Oklahoma, 34-3. Arizona State knocked off No. 16 Utah on Friday night.
As a result, the new AP Top 25 polls released Sunday revealed a shuffle in the top 10 with Oklahoma and Utah disappearing from the rankings due to their losses.
Three top 10 teams won while failing to impress on Saturday.
That list begins with No. 7 Alabama (5-1), which held on late to beat South Carolina (3-3), 27-25. A week after losing to Vanderbilt, the Crimson Tide aren’t playing great. But the voters kept the Crimson Tide at No. 7.
Tennessee, which after losing to Arkansas as week ago needed overtime to beat Florida (3-3), 23-17, on Saturday. The voters punlished the Vols, dropping them three spots to No. 11.
Penn State (6-0) trailed by 14 points at halftime to Southern California (3-3) before mounting a furious rally to beat the Trojans, 33-30, in overtime. Despite that, the voters moved the Nittany Lions up one spot to No. 3.
Top-ranked Texas (6-0) will stayed put, while Oregon (6-0) moved into the No. 2 spot thanks to its win over Ohio State (5-1). The No. 4 Buckeyes (5-1) only fell two spots with No. 5 Georgia rounding out the top five.
Ole Miss (5-2) dropped out of the top 10, falling to nine spots to No. 18. The Rebels joined Tennessee as teams falling out of the top 10 this week.
That allowed LSU to return to the top 10 at No. 8 with Iowa State (6-0) moving up to No. 9 and Clemson (5-1) remaining at No. 10.
After keeping Miami and Clemson in the top 10, the ACC continues to be represented by No. 20 Pittsburgh (6-0), which moved up two spots after its 17-15 win over California, and No. 21 SMU (5-1), which rose four spots during its open week.
With Oklahoma and Utah dropping out of the poll, No. 23 Army (6-0) and No. 25 Navy (5-0) entered the rankings. Its the first time since 1960 the two rival service academies have been ranked in the same poll.
