A 26-year-old man died after his truck crashed into the back of a tow truck Friday evening on Old 41 in Bonita Springs, officials said.

The man was from Bonita Springs.

Friday night around 5:30 p.m., the 26-year-old was driving a Ford F-150 north on Old U.S. 41, south of Channel 30 Drive, the Florida Highway Patrol report reads. Just in front of him was a tow truck, towing another truck.

The tow truck slowed to make a right turn onto Channel Drive, but the Ford F-150 did not, and collided with the back of the tow truck, the report read.

The 26-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has not yet been identified.

The report shows he was wearing a seatbelt. The crash remains under investigation, officials said.

Florida has seen 1,718 fatal crashes statewide this year, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle's " crash dashboard ," which collates and publishes statistics about car crashes. Lee and Collier counties account for 93 of those fatalities, with 77 of them taking place in Lee County alone.

In total, Florida has seen 228,219 crashes this year; 9,192 of all crashes happened in Lee County. Here, August has seen the fewest crashes of any month in 2024, with just 485 crashes accounted for so far; the month is nearly gone.

March saw the highest number of crashes in a month in Lee County, with 1,409 car crashes.
