Watch: Pierce County K9 catches armed robbery suspect during the last call of his career

A Pierce County K9 caught one of two men accused of armed robbery as the final act of his career.

Deputies were dispatched to an armed robbery on Aug. 15 at 12:09 p.m. on 133rd and Pacific Avenue South near Parkland. Two men stole alcohol and used bear spray on employees and bystanders when they were confronted, according to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Department news release .

The release said that the men drove off in a maroon Honda sedan.

A K9 deputy located the sedan driving north on Steele Street near state Route 512. The men drove off when the deputy made a U-Turn, the release said.

“They crashed at an apartment complex and decided to run on foot, probably not realizing that K9 Eddie was the deputy they had to out run,” the release said.

The deputy warned one of the men of the K9, but he continued to run, the release said. K9 Eddie ran after and caught the man. The officer took control of the dog and kept the man on the ground until another officer was able to handcuff him.

K9 Eddie was not able to track the second man, but a witness pointed out a man who was hiding under the stairs, the release said.

The men, who were father and son, were arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of robbery. The son is also accused of eluding, the release said.

“Unfortunately there is a sad story to this case. This was K9 Eddie’s last call of his career. His partner has been promoted to Sergeant and therefore K9 Eddie hung up his badge after this capture,” the release said.
