People’s Pilates has opened a second Tacoma studio.

People’s Pilates , a Tacoma-based Pilates studio, opened its first location in the Hilltop neighborhood in December 2022. On Sept. 7, the business expanded to a second location at 5411 South Tacoma Way.

The new studio is equipped with 11 Pilates reformer machines, which look similar to a padded platform on wheels that moves up and down as workouts are performed. Both locations offer similar classes, including reformer classes for all skill levels, but the Hilltop location offers hot-mat yoga classes, while the South Tacoma location offers spring walls.

Tyler Russell, part owner of People’s Pilates, said in an interview that he and his business partners, Alex Seiz and Kayla Russell, decided to open a Pilates studio in Tacoma after they realized that there weren’t many local studios. Russell added that choosing the locations for the studios was intentional since they wanted to make Pilates accessible to everyone regardless of economic backgrounds, gender, sexuality and age.

“When we started to look at another location, we were like what’s another neighborhood that has maybe not been served by Pilates or movement and we really liked South Tacoma Way,” Russell said. “In addition, there’s all these cool things happening down there with Howdy Bagel and Bluebeard and Fernseed and Intentions Juice. We just really like it down there.”

Russell said the driving force behind their business is community and for that reason they offer a 10% discount to those that reside in the neighborhoods that they operate in. They also offer discounts to first responders, teachers and nurses.

People’s Pilates also is offering a 20% discount to people who purchase a membership during the month of September as a way to celebrate the opening of the new location, according to the studio’s Instagram post.
