Tacoma Police Chief Avery Moore returned to work Wednesday, a week after he was placed on administrative leave . The city manager said she placed him on leave so his personal use of a “city asset” could be investigated.

City Manager Elizabeth Pauli said in a written statement that she verbally counseled Moore and that he would resume his full duties as chief of police.

“I have concluded that the facts and circumstances of the use of the asset, subsequent cost reimbursement and statements made around the use and reimbursement, while not intended to mislead, did not meet expected standards of professional judgment,” Pauli said.

Pauli went on to say that she and Moore hold themselves to the highest standards in exercising discretion and judgment in their positions. She added that their focus is on supporting the work the Tacoma Police Department does for the community.

Moore also released a written statement:

“I was placed on administrative leave to ensure that a thorough and impartial investigation could take place. I accept my discipline and am ready to move forward, fully committed to continuing my work with the Tacoma Police Department and serving the city that I proudly call home.”

“My dedication to the department and this community remains unwavering, and I look forward to restoring the trust and integrity that have defined my career.”

Mayor Victoria Woodards released a statement Wednesday evening, acknowledging the frustration that some residents have felt about the lack of details surrounding Moore’s administrative leave. She said the community’s trust was paramount and that she supported creating a more transparent government.

“I deeply appreciate the community’s interest and eagerness to stay informed about all City issues, and understand how challenging and frustrating it can be not to have all the details regarding our Police Chief’s administrative leave,” Woodards said.

“The City Council focuses on policy matters, and administrative matters including personnel issues are handled by staff. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.”

It obviously wasn't that big of a deal or they would have dealt with it differently. I for one am glad we don't have to spend a ton of money looking for and training a new Chief. He can now try and do better for our city. Let's get these criminals under control, by actually hiring officers and letting them do their job. Then keeping them where they can't reoffend the next day.

Elizabeth Pauli is a no nonsense City Manager! If she thought that there was any intent behind the chief's indiscretion, he would have been fired! Whatever it was, if there's a repeat, City Manager Pauli will not grant a second chance, intent, or no intent!
