A “hero” neighbor saved a woman being attacked by a pack of six dogs after hearing her cries, Washington deputies say.

The neighbor called 911 after hearing the 67-year-old Ephrata woman’s yells for help the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 1, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said in an Oct. 2 Facebook post.

The woman “ tried to defend herself ,” but the dogs “overpowered her,” Kyle Foreman, the sheriff’s office public information officer, told KREM.

The neighbor managed to “stop the attack,” Foreman told the outlet.

Afterward, the neighbor drove the woman to her home, where first responders treated her severe injuries, deputies said.

She was taken to a hospital for additional medical care, deputies said, adding that they were unsure of her condition as of Wednesday.

“The hero in this story is the victim’s neighbor who heard the woman’s cries for help. … Without a doubt, the neighbor helped save the (woman’s) life,” deputies said.

The owner, who lives a short distance away, surrendered the six dogs, according to deputies.

Following a 10-day hold period to check the dogs’ vaccination status, they will be euthanized, deputies said.

The dogs’ owner “received an infraction for each of the six dogs for being Potentially Dangerous/Dangerous Dogs,” which comes with a fine of $6,150, or $1,025 for each dog, the sheriff’s office said.

Ephrata is about 120-mile drive southwest from Spokane.

What to know about dog attacks

Dog bites can cause pain , injury, and spread germs that cause infection,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. “Nearly 1 in 5 people bitten by a dog requires medical attention.”

Dogs bite more than 4.5 million people each year in the U.S., and nearly 800,000 of those people need medical attention, according to the CDC .

Any dog can bite if they feel scared or nervous, or if they want to be alone. You should never approach a dog that seems angry or scared, the CDC said.

If an unfamiliar dog comes up to you, officials say you should:

    • Stay calm and be still.

    • Avoid eye contact with the dog.

    • Don’t panic or make loud noises. Don’t run.

    • Say “no” or “go home” in a deep voice. Stand with the side of your body toward the dog.

    • Slowly raise your hands to your neck and back away slowly.
