Will ex-Giants Julian Love, Leonard Williams return from Seahawks injuries to face NY?

Uchenna Nwosu readied on the practice field’s edge. Julian Love jogged past, right into practice.

And into the Seahawks’ plans to play the Giants (1-3) Sunday.

Love, a former team captain in New York, was full go in Seattle’s practice Thursday. He left the team’s loss at Detroit Monday night in the first half with a thigh injury and did not return. K’Von Wallace replaced the Pro Bowl safety.

Love is on track to start again next to Rayshawn Jenkins in the back of coach Mike Macdonald’s defense for the first-place team in the NFC West (3-1).

Communication problems occurred in the middle of the Seahawks’ defense against Detroit after Love got hurt.

On the Lions’ 70-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Jameson Williams running free across the middle of the defense late in the third quarter, the game-turning score after the Seahawks had closed to within 28-20, Seattle did not have a middle defender for Williams’ deep post route. The Seahawks were in two-deep instead of three-deep coverage, as Macdonald had called.

“Obviously, we work together a majority of the time, so (it’s) just having that communication,” Jenkins said Thursday. “Sometimes we are not able to say things before the snap, but us being out there all the time 99% of the time we see the picture (of the offense) as the same picture. We didn’t even need to communicate on a few plays here and there.

“(it’s) just having that chemistry of knowing where he’s going to be, even though I didn’t have to say anything to him.”

Uchenna Nwosu status

Nwosu was a limited participant in practice for the second consecutive day.

The key outside linebacker is trying to make his season debut coming back from his sprained knee he got on a cut block by Cleveland’s Wyatt Teller in the final preseason game Aug. 24.

Nwosu practiced last week for one day, then had to miss the next two practices and was unable to play in Detroit.

Williams, Baker, Mafe progress

Fomer Giants defensive end Leonard Williams (ribs) and starting weakside linebacker Jerome Baker (hamstring) also practiced on a limited basis Thursday.

Williams really wants to play against his former teammates Sunday, of course.

Macdonald said after the Detroit game Baker was the closest of his five injured defensive starters who missed the game to play in the loss to the Lions.

Starting outside linebacker Boye Mafe practiced Thursday after missing the Seahawks’ walk-through drills Wednesday. That’s a positive sign Mafe, with three sacks through three games, will play Sunday. He missed the Lions game.

DK Metcalf’s hand

DK Metcalf was limited in practice. The wide receiver has had a hand issue the last two weeks.

It did not keep him from playing Monday night in Detroit and becoming the first Seahawks to have three consecutive 100-yard games Monday night. He had seven catches for 104 yards against the Lions, as quarterback Geno Smith completed 38 of 56 passes for 395 yards — all career highs.

Byron Murphy still out

Defensive tackle and rookie first-round draft choice Byron Murphy missed his sixth consecutive practice since he injured his hamstring in the first half of Seattle’s win over Miami two weeks ago.

He appears likely to miss his second straight game.

Mike Morris has gotten more time on the defensive line with Murphy out. Myles Adams played 20 snaps, 38% of the defensive plays, against the Lions. That’s 20 times the defensive snaps Adams had through three games entering Monday.

Defensive coordinator Aden Durde said Adams was a standout on his D-line in Detroit.

“I thought Myles Adams played really well,” Durde said.

Adams is in line for more than 20 snaps Sunday against the Giants.
