The San Francisco 49ers lost an overtime heartbreaker to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday in Las Vegas. Could it have been avoided? Maybe.

A lot of attention has been given to the fact that several 49ers players said they didn't know the playoff overtime rules heading into the extra frame. On Tuesday, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the criticism he's received for that.

Shanahan said he went over that with his assistant coaches before the playoffs began, and asked those assistants to cover that information with their players before Sunday's overtime against the Chiefs.

"We told everyone as we were waiting for the coin toss to review every one to make sure they're sure before we go out," Shanahan said, via ESPN . "So, we asked position coaches to do that. But I didn't cover it in a meeting on the Super Bowl week. I don't think that changes anything."

At least one of his players agreed that it didn't change anything.

Fullback Kyle Juszczk told Mike Silver that he knew about the rule but had forgotten about it over time since it was changed.

"Why does it f****** matter?" Juszczyk said. "That changes nothing for me as a player, whatsoever. If I know the rule or don't know the rule, I'm trying to do the exact same thing on the field. It's just people looking for a way to s*** on [Kyle Shanahan]."

Shanahan is now 0-3 in Super Bowls as a head coach and coordinator.
