The 5th Annual “Cars for Canines” event is happening this Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Melton Lake Park in Oak Ridge.

Hosted by Explore Oak Ridge and sponsored by Little Lake Pet Lodge, this family-friendly day is expected to be fun for all, according to a news release. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter and Anderson County Humane Society to help care for homeless animals and promoting animal welfare in the community.

The event is free to attend, but donations and participation in fundraising activities are encouraged. Ensure all dogs are on leashes and cats are in carriers for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Here are some of the activities scheduled:

    • Enjoy live music, pet-friendly activities, door prizes, and free face painting for kids.
    • As part of the fundraising efforts, local food vendors, including Rhyno’s Roadside BBQ, Hot Dog Hut, Happy Dog Creamery, and Hops and Hounds, will be on-site to offer a delicious assortment of treats.
    • Veterinarian Matt Jinks will be available to provide reduced-cost microchipping for $20 and rabies vaccinations for $10.
    • Car Show: Marvel at a wide range of classic cars, hot rods, and motorcycles, presented by the Summer Knight Cruisers. Car enthusiasts can register their vehicles for $20 (cash only), with the first 100 registered cars receiving special goody bags. Awards will be given to the top 25 vehicles.

    Clear the shelters: Half-price adoption

Since we're on the topic of animals - the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter is participating in the 10th anniversary of the nationwide Clear the Shelters event .

Now through Sept. 10, the adoption fees at the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, 395 Belgrade Road, are half-price for all approved appliants. The shelter is open noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

At the Aug. 12 City Council meeting, Oak Ridge City Manager Randy Hemann said he is looking for land to build a new Oak Ridge Animal Shelter. Money for purchasing the land is in this year's city budget, as The Oak Ridger reported earlier this year.
