Community band performs Sunday evening at Bissell Park in Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge Community Band members perform their Labor Day concert at 7 p.m. this Sunday in A.K. Bissell Park.

The free event is an entertaining way to celebrate the unofficial end of summer. Bring chairs or blankets for outdoor seating. Razzleberry’s Ice Cream Lab will provide refreshments.

Please note this concert, which in previous years has been held on Labor Day, will be performed on Sunday evening before Labor Day.

One of several highlights for Sunday’s concert and which children will especially enjoy is the band’s performance of “A Disney Spectacular” featuring “Arabian Nights – Friends Like Me” from “Aladdin”; “Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast”; “Under the Sea” from “The Little Mermaid”; and “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin.” Still another highlight will be “Gershwin!” with excerpts from “Fascinating Rhythm,” “Embraceable You,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and “I Got Rhythm.” And Star Trek fans will enjoy hearing “Symphonic Suite from Star Trek” with “To Boldly Go,” “Enterprising Young Men,” and “End Credits.”

Recently, the Community Band has lost two members who have contributed so much to the band program for many years – flutist Jean Box and tuba player Bruce Keck. To commemorate their memory and long years of band membership, the Community Band will perform Shaun Salem’s arrangement of Pavel Tschesnokoff’s “Salvation is Created.”

Other songs on Sunday evening’s program will be “Hosts of Freedom,” “America, the Beautiful,” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Rounding out the band’s performance will be “Cajun Folk Songs” and “The Sixties” featuring a number of popular 1960s songs − “Good Vibrations,” “For Once in My Life,” “Tijuana Taxi,” “The Twist,” “Alfie,” “You Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and more.

The Oak Ridge Community Band is directed by Shaun Salem and will perform its next concert Oct. 27 in A.K. Bissell Park. Musicians who would like to join the band can call 865-202-2773, and the public can go online for more concert information at www.orcb.org and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/OakRidgeCommunityBand .
